Artist History
Started in January of 1997 by keyboardist (and music extraordinaire) Skulian ‘Scully’ Balasopoulov, Zero Flip Side was an industrial-techno project in the making. Creating innovative beats, beautifully twisted harmonies, covered by cutting edge lyrics, Scully laid down the foundation of a special band. Adding the heavy, but smart guitar styling of Percy Trayan, allowed for Zero Flip Side to enter the category of live performance. All they needed was a singer. In the fall of 1997, Eastsider Felicia ‘Flea’ Mullins auditioned for Zero Flip Side. Her Bjork meets N’Dea Davenport sound, and poetic put the right twist to Zero Flip Side, turning it into an original outfit. The mixing of Scully’s grunge-industrial-classical style and Flea’s drum and bass, hip-hop, pop influences created a brand new sound; never heard before nor compared to.With lyrics like:"Stumbling blocks are my stepping stones in disguiseYou have the freedom to wander /So don’t be frightened/This is just a Daydream. . . "from the ethereal song, "DAYDREAMER" are just a taste of the blissfully mad paradoxes in ZFS’s music.Zero Flip Side has fine tuned their performance from disciplined rehearsal schedules to private party gigs on the Eastside and in Seattle. As one shocked party-goer stated at a successful Seattle house party, "No one stopped dancing until their (ZFS’s) set was over!" And, "I’ve never heard anything like it (ZFS) before! They’re original and tight! Very f**kin’ tight!"Zero Flip Side is available for gigs, but most importantly, they are available for instigating a wondrous evolution within the World music scene. |

Press Reviews
Zero Flip Side - "Temperal Zone"I'm pretty lame when it comes to keeping up the local music scene in and around Seattle. I'm even lamer for not having a more firm knowledge of local Electro/Industrial bands since I fancy myself to be a connoisseur. So when something like Zero Flip Side comes my way I get a sudden dose of reality. Without making too many generalities, let me pay a comparative compliment to Zero Flip Side and then I'll get on with it. Zero Flip Side sound like a cross between NIN (circa Pretty Hate Machine) and Morcheeba. Two excellent bands. But this is only the initial reaction. After a few listens you start to pick up on the subtle nuances that make Zero Flip Side more that just another narrow frequency in the gigantic heap of MHz that is electonica. Their first release, Temperal Zone, contains ten solid songs, great package design (props to Rebecca Zimmer, hope all is well in Africa) and is supported by a damn fine web site. ZFS call themselves a techno band for the industrial goth. Though their music does contain all the best elements of techno, ZFS manage to jettison its pitfalls, mainly mind numbing repetition and lack of structure. Their songs breathe and give you time to absorb. But don't get me wrong…this album would feel as at home on the dance floor as it would on any industrial goth play list. My only complaint here is that I want to hear more of the male vocalist, Scully. He is equally as good as the female, Flea (I don't get the impression that this is any fascination with the X-Files or the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and when they play off of each other it creates a totally original element that I love. I can't wait to see this band live. Bravo! -Jeff Ashley- |
