Artist description
Formed in the spring of 1995, Kaliroots is an original roots reggae band. They will transport you into another universe with the sounds of the Caribbean, complete with incredible rhythms and processions. Mixed to perfection, the drum & bass will hit you directly in the bottom of your chest. With the harmonious melodies, brass, and guitar influenced by Blues and Rock, Kaliroots readily shares their vision of the world facing Babylon. The result is surprising, pleasant and positively intoxicating. |

Artist History
KALIROOTS NEW CD RIEN A PERDRE WILL BE RELEASED ON MAY 17th 2000. Recorded this year and mixed by Jim Fox. Kaliroots started out as reggae jams in basement in 1995. Playing for fun every week turned into big. Maybe its because we love reggae, but we have been playing the Montreal music scene ever since. We have opened for the Wailers. We just finished recording our first album. "ROOTS ROCK KEBEK" |

Press Reviews
Your roots are showing: Kaliroots are in a league of their own by Scott C. "I'd never had to deal with such a reaction before," said Alain Peddie, waving his arms in the air and smiling with disbelief. "Up until then, people had nothing to say but good words and respect, so I just had to laugh." Peddie, who is frontman for the South Shore-based roots reggae outfit Kaliroots, is referring to an e-mail he received from a "fan" who claimed to have enjoyed a performance by the band, but politely asked that Peddie stop singing like a black man. "I don't try to sound like anyone," explains Peddie. "The sound you hear is coming from a real respect for the origins and roots of this music, but it's also coming from inside me." The light, 10-piece incarnation of Kaliroots has been together for three years, playing mostly in and around Montreal, boasting a repertoire that includes songs in both English and French. "We are Québécois, after all," laughs Peddie, "and even when you're playing roots you have to represent where you're from." One might expect a band like this to come under non-stop scrutiny and digging from critics and purists alike. That is, if you take into consideration that the accomplished, stage-ready members of the group all happen to be white. Their music does plenty to dispel any misbegotten bias that skeptical closed minds may have, bringing the focus right back to the music, where it should have been in the first place. "We don't have any competition, I guess, "says Peddie, grinning again. "There doesn't seem to be any other white reggae bands playing in French and English." Some may remember that back in February, Kaliroots had the ultimate opportunity to represent Montreal and themselves when they opened for the legendary Wailers at a packed show at the Medley. "That was an honor -and we got nothing but love and respect from the guys in the Wailers as well as the audience." Peddie and Kaliroot's dedication to reggae music has caught the attention of some very important audience members of late. Apparently Tuff Gong Records president Cassandra Goins has shown more than a little interest in the band after approaching them at a recent show. Negotiations are now in the works, but in the meantime Kaliroots continue to bring the positive vibes the best way they know how. |
