    Artist History
Free Dirt was formed in the mid 1990's on the south side of Saint Louis Missouri USA. The band has enjoyed monthly gigs at The Way Out Club since 1994. Other repeat venues include The Hi-Pointe, Ciceros, Blueberry Hill locally and The Cross Roads Music Festival in Memphis, TN. The band has recorded with several engineers including Jack Petracek, Jeff Hoffman and Dave Probst. The Broom Factory Studio of Mike Martin is where Free Dirt has been calling home for the past two years. The CD "Free Dirt" was released in 1997. Teaming up with St. Louis bands Johnny Magnet, The Highway Matrons, Soul Food Cafe, Trip Daddies and Ouija, they formed the musician Co-Op Rooster Lollipop and put out "The Way Out Club CD". Writing, recording and performing for half a decade, Free Dirt has developed into a song machine. New recorded material will be out very soon, and the history of the band will continue...

    Press Reviews
I'll go out on a pretty thick limb here and say that Free Dirt are the best unsigned rock band in St. Louis right now—worthy successors to the Tupelo and Bottle Rocket traditions, but very different in their essence. -Richard Byrne, The Riverfront Times, Oct. 15-21, 1997 Free Dirt, a conspicuously tight quartet that melds jaunty country rock and slashing chording, with occasional pop elements and dabs of punk fervor…showed that inspiration still co-exists with all the perspiration coming from grain-belt rock bands. -Michael Kuelker, St. Louis Post Dispatch Free Dirt, one of the few roots rock/insurgent country/etc. ensembles to actually develop the genre beyond where their predecessors left it… I hesitate to call Free Dirt "roots rock," since their self-titled debut is notably more compelling than the recordings of most bands in the style. -Aaron Lanterman, Night Times
