Whether defiling bubblegum sing-alongs with piercingly atonal guitar runs or turning gender roles on their heads in a jock-taunting video, Orlando's standard-bearers of brat-boy rock have never met a straight-up career opportunity they couldn't quickly turn into chaos."I welcome any attention, positive or negative," boasts Precious frontman Steve Garron, whose wild-eyed persona and Mom-dressed-me wardrobe put him squarely between Damien Thorne and Bobby Brady. "Just look at me."It's hard not to. Live, the band has been known to give Iggy Pop a run for his money in the self-punishment sweepstakes. Its penchant for unpredictable, impulsive antics fits Precious' musical ethos to a Ti. Deceptively simple rhythms and melodies provide the foundation for blasts of distortion and lyrics that satirize the seamy underside of polite company. Miss a word here or there? Just wait for Garron's between-song rabble-rousing, in which he takes the crowd's emotional temperature -- and then pushes it into the red zone.The misconduct took on visual form last spring, when the band's "Bi-Curious George" video was spotlighted on Time-Warner Cable's "Bootleg Orlando" program. Viewers weaned on the Nirvana ideal of high-school anarchy followed Precious and their pals across football fields and through locker rooms in a clip that lampooned the homoerotic overtones of institutionalized sports."People said it was the only thing that woke them up during the student portion of the (Florida) Film Festival," Garron relates. Another highway of propriety crossed, and he didn't even look both ways.
