From the start, it was a strange night at The Middle East. The Upstairs room was packed, but this was not 11:30 Friday night with a perennial headliner bombarding a bunch of long-hairs with decibels, nor was it a shoegazer band playing to two hundred of their brooding, bespeckled buddies. This was Tuesday night in the middle of a good old fashioned nor’easter, when no sensible Bostonian would dare venture beyond his living room. And on stage was a “who?” band made up of three normal looking guys in buttondown shirts and khaki pants, all lined up in a row (no drummer 5 feet behind the rest of the band here) noodling their way through an off time, mostly instrumental set. But there was but one really bored person in the whole place: The bartender, for not a soul was ambling over to the bar for a drink. Everyone was transfixed on the “who?” band. This band was Alotia. They played tunes that reeked of the cleaner/jazzier side of Phish, with quite a few complex time signatures, peppered throughout. The interplay between the trio’s instruments: bass, drums, guitar, and occasional keyboard, were executed with unparalleled precision. Drummer Pete Koeplin ran the show with inventive drumming, almost always leading with his nimble right hand chiming out rhythms on his ride cymbal. To his immediate left stood bass player Marty Watts who at once held down the groove, and colored the songs with tastefully timed, right on, upper register riffs and chords. Sten Bowen’s guitar playing was simply mesmerizing as he chimed and picked is way well into Trey Anastasio territory. The result was a totally unique - especially for Boston - sound that depended as much on the listener keeping up as it did the band keeping it together.Alotia’s true beauty lies in their crescendos. Where most bands find it necessary to rev up the chaos to the point of fracture, then hit the big chord and dig into the three chord blues rock to resolve the situation, Alotia would consistently bring the energy up to the same fracture point, but then dive back into an intricate, groovy riff. Think “Run Like An Antelope,” but never out of control. The next time the Marquee reads “Alotia,” take a brake from the decibels and the dirges and go check out a night of clean, precise, inventive music. But get your drinks before the show starts, you won’t want to miss a second.- Pete Valle Northeast Performer
