Press Reviews
"Alek Vila takes a step into the future with sounds and writing that has flavors of 80's psychedelic English Pop, while moving forward with gorgeous production and clear, accessible, and endearing vocals. At times the music is almost progressive, experimental, but is always firmly planted in keyboard oriented alternative art pop rock. The long mp3 here, "Contact", is a moody grooving masterpiece. Vila sings, 'coming down on you, when you turn your eyes away, I'm making Contact, I'm having impact' and the motion of the music creates a perpetual stoned sway to the perfect key/bass parts and unassuming yet solid drum program. The guitar tone has a dreamy texture as it arpeggiates a constant clean pedal, providing the rotating quality to the song. Wonderful. "Belief", takes another peek into the keyboard/guitar writing world of Vila - the tune has an ease about it - and as it ends it moves from a funky groove to a jazz pop feel ala Toto, with Vila performing a vocal trapeze high above falsetto land with lush reverb - palatable, and mp3'd here as a clip. "Horizon" utilizes pipe organ patches and saxophones to deliver the lyrical message Vila relates, 'a broken hand has lost its grip and i can feel that [ceiling] slip away from my head, and while you take your time i'm losing my mind' - with a great guitar hook and left channel bell that accents the tune. Those with a taste for the progressive will gravitate to "Safe in my Keep", as Vila's production includes mandolin ramblings and lead guitar chromatic insanit y, accompanied by 6/8 tied robotic piano chords - knocked out into the record with the delight of water torture - and the song scores with its somewhat demented musical fun, mp3'd here as a clip. Overall, the CD is a complete music work - and Vila, with h is attractive voice and obvious songwriting/performing talents, seems destined for bigger things. Cool CD." - Don Kimenker, Earbuzz.comi |
