Artist History
Oshyna was born out of the ashes of Robert's second incarnation of a band called Astoria. Michael Flint and I were looking for a new singer and saw Jana's add in The Rocket, a local Seattle Music Publication. Within a few months, begining around Nov of 1993, after trying out various musicians Oshyna was finally born. At that time we were a trio, consisting of Jana Zaki, Robert Carpenter, and Michael Flint. A couple of years after Oshyna's begining, Michael Flint (bass and keyboards), left. At that time Jana and Robert decided to continue as a duo. In April of 1998 we released our first CD, Imagine And Enter The Solarverse. Since then we have been doing shows in and around Seattle. One place we have been playing at, on a semi regular basis, is a Tea House called Mr. Spots Chai House, one of the best places around Seattle to see artists trying to create outside the box. In between shows we have been also working on some new songs, and new directions. |

Robert Carpenter: Guitar and keyboards/seqencing----- Jana Zaki: Vocals and various percussion Jana Zaki's Bio: Lead Vocalist behind Oshyna's music. Jana's voice developed over the years while exposed to a variety of singers and bands from the late 1970's and 1980's. Attending hundreds of live concerts, she realized that she could sing and songwrite as well. Practicing vocal styles on her own and with several bands that did Cover Tunes from: Fleetwood Mac, The Pretenders, Heart and Steely Dan, these bands mostly remained garage bands. She recorded a demo with a Punk Band in Philadelphia that was writing original music she was asked to sing for while attending college at Temple University. She had made her own demo tape singing songs from an Album produced by Rita Coolidge. Jana had an opportunity to sing in Top 40 bands in Atlantic City, NJ but refused this style of singing, because she was drawn to more original styles of music and singing. She moved to Seattle in 1992 from the East Coast in search of a better lifestyle and to form a band. In 1993, placed an add in The Seattle Rocket, where the band members of "Astoria" were looking for a lead vocalist and called her add. This band later became the Duo, which is now "OSHYNA".Thru the original music written by Michael Flint and Robert Carpenter, Jana's voice now had been given the creative juice she so long looked for in music. This music was challenging to write lyrics for as well as vocal rhythms, now had to be put on a stretch of imagination to blend in with their style of music. During this same time Jana had gotten more into meditation techniques that would enhance her natural creativity to sing and songwrite and she sang in Devotional Style Singing within these meditation groups and later with the Spiritual Light Choir that formed in Seattle. Jana Zaki continues to be a spiritual seeker, and is drawn to the esoteric and alternative styles not only in music but also in life. With her hypnotic but powerful vocals blends with her creative writing style. Her song writing pulls the listener into the mystical dreamy world where she tells the stories of ancient cultures, people she has known, experiences she has had, and other worlds she believes exists. What a mix hey?She has written 10 of the song lyrics and vocal parts on Oshyna's first CD "Imagine and Enter The SolarVerse" Today in the year 2000, she continues to write new songs for Oshyna and plans to record them at a later date. She encourages us all to find the "Seeker" within. |
