Artist description
"Soft, dream-enhancing chill-out tracks with trance ideals invite you to surrender your mind. Spherical ambient textures snuggle up to tribal-influenced percussive beats, prodding vocal clips and crumpled melodic textures." Melissa Piazza |

Artist History
AVALON started off his recording career with SSR Records / Freezone (sub-label of Brussels-based Crammed Discs) back in 1992 (under the name "THC") and released a first 12" called 'Tetra', an eclectic collection of tracks, if he says so himself (was even quoted as being "raucous" and "nutty" by the MELODY MAKER). It wasn't a great commercial hit, but did all right for a first effort. Soon after, he released the first AVALON 12" called 'Nautical Dream' followed by his debut CD 'Earth Water Air Fire' which was critically acclaimed and had certain commercial success as well. The following year saw the track 'New Frontier' and his remix of Karl Biscuit's classic 'Hierophone' included on 'Freezone 1: The Phenomenology of Ambient'; a timeless compilation of excellent ambient tracks written especially for the occasion by the world's greatest artists such as: Ken Ishii, Pete Namlook, Terre Thaemlitz, Moby, Porcupine Tree (Richard Barbieri, ex-Japan), David Byrne, to name but a few. After another successful 12" in 1995 called 'Fish/Linked' (which was reviewed by MIXMAG as sounding like it was recorded in a spacecraft high above the Andes!), he worked on various projects and continued recording new tracks, many of which are now included on the new 'PUREJUNK' CD made available online through MP3.COM... |

Press Reviews
VOX Magazine: "It was bound to happen... the ideal marriage of fuck-off bpms with Ambient, care of Tim Handels (aka Avalon). His Earth Water Air Fire album, from the Brussels Crammed Discs/SSR label, is rich Trance City Techno with chillingly perfect vocal lines and thorough dance beats. There's an air of nostalgia about it too; strong elements of House through the ages are sweetly re-defined in these bold sounds. The first four tracks, from 'Hydroscope' to 'Nautical Dream', are outstanding, while the rest simply continue the theme. Verging on the edge of pop, here's one whizz kid completely at ease with his grooves." *** MIXMAG: "Weirdo music alert! Belgium techno whippersnapper Avalon enters the UK scene with an EP that sounds as though it was recorded in a spacecraft high above the Andes. First there's the funky breakbeat techno of 'Fish Red' remixed by The Arc, which leads nicely into the deep ambience of 'Linked'. Flip over for the original of 'Fish Red', and you've got a stomping funky groover with a punchy bassline that will really kick. Not content with this, our protégé delivers a slow tribal groove with sampled vocals and lush melodies and calls it 'Midsummer's Night Dream' before he goes off to grow a really big moustache and eats lots of chocolates while Move D do their stuff on a reworking of 'Linked'." Anthony Teasdale. *** GENERATOR: "Schizophrenic grooves which range from the warped techno/house collision of 'Fish Red' to the tripped-out bliss of 'Linked'. The real treasures here are the breathtaking 'Midsummer's Night Dream', which is pretty and tribal all at once..." Steven Ash. |
