Artist History
Beginning her music career in her hometown, Wellington, New Zealand, Theo Ray ran up the local charts and college radio playlists to become a local and national sensation. With this success in hand, she continued to develop her musical voice in several side ventures with composer / producer Eamon O’Kane including the alternative electronic band, Formica, and managed to chart top-ten in two genre’s simultaneously. Various labels took notice and in 1997, Theo Ray signed a two year publishing contract with Sony Music. She wrote and recorded broadcast television jingles including ‘Just A Thought’, the signature song for the Dow Jones Chemical international advertising campaign, which is still in use today. With both critical and fan support, Theo Ray received a nomination for Best New Female Artist – New Zealand Music Awards – 1998.Additional soundtracks include the short films, ‘Playing Possum’ and ‘Letters About the Weather’ by director Peter Salmon, both gaining critical success and awards from various U.S. and European film festivals, with ‘Letters’ set to screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Other songs from the Theo Ray catalogue have been optioned for such feature films as Daryn Aronovsky’s ‘Requiem for a Dream’, and the spy thriller, ‘Operation Chloe’.Local success expanded to Australia, and Europe including a Number Two hit, ‘Smell’, in Belgium where Theo Ray was featured on several live-to-air broadcasts in support of the European tour. With New Zealand, Australia, and Europe on the charts, and with a local music publishing portfolio developing, Theo Ray was noticed by the international advertising company Bedford Falls, and Ad Director Barry Young brought the young talent Theo Ray , and the established talent, Peter DiStefano (Porno for Pyros), together to form the new collaboration: Godbox. Produced by Richard Dashut (Fleetwood Mac), their first single ‘Sink to the Bottom’, was included on the Hollywood film soundtrack, ‘Teen Monster’. Leaving New Zealand behind, Theo Ray relocated to Hollywood, where she has teamed with English guitarist, Warren Huart (Star69, Itch) , Canadian Bassist, David Kilner (Jerry DuSett), and legendary Kiwi drummer, Stanley Mitchell (Hello Sailor, The Drongos). Theo Ray has merged her European style, and thoughtful, edgy lyrics with new L.A.- asphalt rock to record her latest CD, ‘Dress Me Up’, at Matrix Studios. Pre-release, industry buzz has noted the needle-sharp riffs and chop-block rhythms shifting these catchy pop-rock songs into overdrive.Theo Ray is currently making waves in the Los Angeles, building a strong local following and playing live at such venues as The Roxy, Golfingers, The Joint, The Gig, The West End and The Martini Lounge. As of March 2001, she is now listed as one of the “Top Los Angeles Bands” on Garageband.com and also on Garageband, her CD’s title song ‘Dress Me Up’ was recently listed as a “Current Leader” on the Alternative Charts. Theo Ray recently headlined to a standing-only crowd at the Beltaine Festival in Ojai, California, and she is on the shortlist for next season’s hit VH1 series, “Bands on the Run”. |
