Press Reviews
"Tokyo's foreign bands seem to be pressing CDs faster than flapjacks out of the frying pan. While much of the material can be lumped together under the "pub rock" or "Britpop" headings, The Gladys' "Degenerate Pop" sound is something altogether different. The stream of songs on the quartet's debut CD have wacky names like "Drugs Are Good For You" and "Sex is Aerobic." They blend together lo-fi indie guitar band rhythm tracks with off-the-wall lyrics, samples, sequencer-driven drum beats, and stream-of-consciousness blatherings. Sometimes tuneful, sometimes purposefully atonal, The Gladys' off-kilter approach has a zany appeal that will go down well with fans of the likes of Frank Zappa or Pere Ubu." -- Dan Grunebaum, Tokyo Classified, March 20, 1999 |
