Artist History
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, well, ok, back in 1991 in Victoria, British Columbia, Cal Johnson and Gabriel Smyth met up to form the band Vo. Accompanied by drummer Rod Campell, they went on to perform many live shows, always playing exclusively original material. For almost two years, Vo established a presence in the local music scene solely by playing live. Highlights were a televised performance on Vancouver's Channel 13 UTonight, and a three night gig opening for 54-40 at Harpo's, Victoria. In 1992, Vo recorded a five song self-titled EP at Profile Studios in Vancouver. Originally released in cassette only, Vo's EP was picked up by the newly formed indie label Top Records and re-released on CD. It was at this point that things began to go hideously wrong. Top Records folded shortly after completely blowing the marketing of Vo's EP. Vo was also experiencing member changes, or to put it more succinctly, their drummers kept quitting without warning. With Lincoln McCulloch in the drummer ejection seat, Vo decided to broaden their horizons and seek the greener pastures of Calgary, Alberta. Vo got off to a good start in Calgary, procuring gigs such as opening for the Rose Chronicles and headlining a show with the Blue (now New) Meanies. They also performed several television broadcasts, and their CD found air-time on both local mainstream and campus radio stations. However, the problem of holding down a permanent drummer continued to rear its ugly head. Lincoln quit the band and moved back to Victoria, after which a series of drummers came and went. After about four or so years of not only struggling to stay in focus on the local scene, but to also keep a permanent third member, Gabriel and Cal decided to start fresh. With a new band name and a focus strictly on studio recording, they found an uninhibited release for their creative energies. |

Press Reviews
Very nice instrumentation and vocals. A little on the spacey side with all the reverb and all, but not in a negative way. It’s all done very well. There is a poignant message here in the lyrics, even though you are hit over the head with the unforgettable chorus. There are a lot of nicely layered guitars in this song. Each play I’m picking up more lyrics and they are really... uh... natty. I promise, if you just get this song, check it out, I’ll shut up about it." - Bob Porri - mp3artistarchive.com |
