Scene vets try a new Technique
BY GREGORY NICOLL and LEE SMITH
Like the Clockwork Orange brainwashing treatment from which their band's name is taken, the Ludivico Technique offers a form of re-conditioning for five Atlanta scene veterans.
Mac Carter, Alan Connor, Tim Neilsen, Dave V. Johnson and Dan Wootan together represent three-fourths of drivin n cryin, three-fourths of Kathleen Turner Overdrive, most of Beautiful and half of El Carnivore -- along with scattered fragments from the Johnny Hyde Quartet, Needle and assorted other projects. But rather than getting strapped into chairs with their eyes clamped open and forced to relive their rock 'n' roll past, the pedigreed collective is voluntarily trying something different.
"This band represents a different place, a different way of thinking, from anything else we've done," explains singer/ guitarist Carter, who originally envisioned the Technique as an updated version of KTO's pop-punk. However, the project soon went in a decidedly more psychedelic direction. "We still love sounding like the Ramones, but it was time to try something different."
The new band has its hard-rocking moments, but when compared to the bottled-angst fury of KTO, Ludivico Technique seems like "trippy head music." The Technique's weirder leanings spiral largely from guitarist Connor, who calls the music spatial but not self-indulgent. "If anyone's paid attention to my playing over the years," he says, "they'll know I wasn't out of key. I was just psychedelic."
"We're not pandering to any particular audience," Carter says. "We'll use guitars, keyboards, samplers, coffee cans or whatever we can get our hands on to make cool sounds."
Although all five members have other projects and interests, they insist that the Ludivico Technique is no one-time side project. "We're not trying to be 'kings of the scene' or get a record deal," says Carter. "We really don't care about any of that. This time, we're just having fun."
