Apollo 13 are sadly no more. The Guelph five-piece called it quits around last fall. After changing their name to Lunik 13 (a pretty stupid idea, really) just before the Tom Hanks movie came out (to avoid confusion, of course), they changed it back for their farewell gig at the Albion Hotel. In their short history they contributed two tracks to the Guelph Happens CD (available through DROG records - check out their website) and recorded material at the Gas Station in Toronto with Don Kerr (Rheostatics) which was only released on quickly-assembled tapes at their farewell show (they sold out their short-lived stock). Their live shows were mostly in Guelph, Toronto, Hamilton and K-W. Original bass player Tristan O'Malley is now a part of the thriving Black Cabbage - I happen to play accordion, organ and saxophone in the folkpunk octupus (we leave for our first western tour june 13). When he left Apollo 13 he was replaced by Matt Hughes ... and now both former bass players play guitar together in Flashlight - an amazing band that sounds like the Buzzcocks, Neil Young, and Rancid in a blender (the band also features Fil Buccino - bass - from House of Velvet and Tim Thomson - drums - from Weasel). Guitarist/songwriter Stu Whitehead now plays in a band called Norman, a noisy Teenage Fanclub/shoegazer kind of band. I have yet to see them, but if I'm not mistaken he plays bass. Guitarist Brian and drummer Graham Thompson belong to a band with the best name i've heard in a long time - FISTING JESUS. Their gigs are very few and far between and it's more of a joke than anything else. I'm not sure what singer Tony is up to. He finished his degree at Guelph and I believe he's in Toronto. Apollo 13 were pretty rough when they first started, but were starting to get a lot better by the time they packed it in. Internal tensions were too much for the band to bear, however, and it didn't surprise anyone when they quit. the final show was quite hilarious, full of ripe sarcasm as five people who were quite aware they would never play with each other again proceeded to cut each other up and their well-placed hecklers. i'd never seen a conscious final gig before. This is probably way more information than you needed, but isn't reems of useless information what newsgroups are all about? - Michael Barclay, Black Cabbage (1996) |
