Artist History
Roundboxx is the electronic ambient project of Michael Kirson, (a.k.a. Kirson). A Detroit native who spends most of his time seeking out the perfect sound in the depths of his dark apartment studio. Having spent his youth collecting records and fooling around with low-end keyboards, Michael’s eighteenth year marked the beginning of his musical life. He began playing first the organ and then the guitar in a couple of Detroit area ensembles. From there he quickly excelled and moved into writing, and performing his own songs. His musical maturity was only beginning when he was picked up by Underground Sunshine; a Detroit based indie label. Michael spent over a year in the studio working on his debut album; the Roundboxx project was born from those sessions. With seemingly unlimited studio time, and access to state-of-the-art equipment Michael began to develop a new palette of sound. But due to circumstances out of his control the production of the record ceased, and he was left to find other means for getting his music heard. Even though the project fell through, Michael emerged with a fresh and new understanding of the possibilities of electronics and music. Focusing, for the last couple of years on performing and experimenting with the sound of his musical alter ego Kirson, only recently has he decided to complete his Roundboxx recordings. The music of Roundboxx consists of full and colorfully rich sonic tapestries. No measure escapes without a subtle oscillating tone, or a fragmented melodic line, and Michael uses a variety of melodic and rhythmic production tricks to blend sounds and beats that wouldn’t normally fit together. With Roundboxx Michael attempts to both compliment, and transcend the world around him by utilizing his unique sonic palette. Following what Aaron Copland called “The Long Line” in his compositions, Michael sometimes brings out the gritty streets of Detroit and other times creates a lush, ethereal fantasy world that can move the listener to ease. With multiple projects going at any given time, Michael is always working. Roundboxx is, for the most part, a studio project, and the electronic, ambient side of Michael’s sonic universe; but he also performs under his last name Kirson. Michael is also one half of the Kirson-Borghi Development, an experimental, performance/studio based project with b: group/ records label-mate, and the artist behind Acquiesce, Matt Borghi. Currently, Michael is working on a full-length recording for b: group/ records under his Roundboxx pseudonym; but he’s also in the pre-production stages of his formal Kirson debut, which is tentatively slated for an early 2001 release. |
