Artist description
There’s a line in the song, “Tell It To The Children,” in which Jan sings, “Everywhere you’ve been they say you sing like Loretta Lynn, but you look too damn much like Charlie Pride.” She’s singing about herself—Pettey has a gritty voice that was made to wrap itself around traditional country-western music. Jan Pettey is truly “The PRIDE of the Carolinas!” [excerpts from Fayetteville Observer-Times article by Michael Futch, reporter] |

Artist History
Jan Pettey, Country Singer/Songwriter, was born October 12, 19??, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Pettey was first introduced to country music by her father, the late G.A. Simpson, retired Army sergeant. Her father was the only black person in a band that played blues and country. He played the guitar all the time, often getting out his acoustic and gathering the kids all around him—before long, though, Jan was singing more than her dad. She started singing with her first band at the tender age of nine, and gave her first public performance in the school talent show as a third or fourth grader at the formerly all-black Newbold Elementary School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She performed the first song she ever wrote, “Long Gone,” a country western style ballad that didn’t go over with her peers–it just wasn’t soulful enough. Ever since her first performance, Jan has felt the need to travel throughout the country sharing her love and unique voice with people everywhere. Jan has been seen on many TV programs in the Carolina's, including NORTH CAROLINA NOW, CAROLINA SPOTLITE, and CAROLINA AT NOON, to name a few. Highlights of Jan's career included her appearance on the MONTEL WILLIAMS SHOW and a guest appearance on the satellite television broadcast of USA vs. THE WORLD. Jan started “Grandparents Day Celebration” in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in March 1994. Grandparents Day Celebration is a special day for the elder who reside in retirement homes and rest homes to come out for an old time down home Sunday picnic. Jan routinely visits hospitals, she has done fund raising events for Alms House, The Homeless, Helping Hands Mission in Raleigh, N.C., and public schools throughout the country. |
