Artist History First, let’s explain the meaning of Black Souls. "BLACK" represents the color that engulfs all colors, meaning as a group we represent all skin colors and hold no racial boundaries. "BLACK" also represents the negativity we have experienced in our lives, but more importantly, our ability to take all the negativity and transfer that into positive vibes through our music! "SOULS" represents the untouchable spirit created by GOD that all men possess - the inner strength of MAN.The music of Black Souls began in 1989 with Virgil Nelson (Vdsoulj’A) and a close friend, William Santos, aka SBull, performing on street corners and small talent shows in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They wrote songs and recorded into a Karaoke machine over beats laid down by local DJ’s. The two performed and recorded with DJ DangerousDemon under the name "Brainwave" and entertained wherever they went.In 1992, tragedy struck the crew. SBull was shot in the mouth with a .38 caliber handgun, went into a coma, and was paralyzed from the neck down. He lived as a quadriplegic until 1994, when he left this world to go where he can no longer feel any pain.Brainwave could not survive without SBull, and eventually Vdsoulj’A joined forces with DJ Freeze, and started Black Souls in 1995. Under the Freeztyle label, the first single was released, called "Black Souls and Fool’s Gold." It did well for an unadvertised single, selling over 300 copies.From 1995 through 1997, Black Souls nearly faded away. Vdsoulj’A and Freeze went separate ways and "V" spent his time in a drug and alcohol induced haze. In late 1997, Vdsoulj’A got into trouble and was put directly in the face of death when he had his hand almost completely cut off. Three grueling operations and a year of rehabilitation helped Vdsoulj’A to wake up and realize the true potential of Black Souls.Black Souls leads a cause set to DESTROY the GLORIFICATION OF DEATH in hip hop aimed at our children and future leaders by teaching and representing the hard reality of death and the traumatic effects it spawns. We are old with funerals of children and young adults led to thinking death is a friend through the constant barrage of the death being glorified in the music that surrounds them!"2-G AND BEYOND," released in 1999, and now featuring Shawn Edwards (MC Cole,) Guentin Nelson (Gee Que,) and Gregory Fletcher (Dat Lil’ G) our freshman LP release maintains the original roots of our birth. In our sophomore project, "IN THE FACE OF DEATH" (ITFOD) our goals are very evident in our transformation and maturity. Combining forces with an electronica producer named HYPNOSTATIC has reshaped and redefined the SOUL camp as we strive to push the limits of creative endeavor. Black Souls is the sounds of MOODS. Our music is created upon anger, sadness, happiness, etc. We want our listeners to know that our music is as natural as our personalities. Don't label us as "feel good" because we may do a song filled with anger or vice versa. It is the music that determines the outcome of the vocals for the Souls! We are only as real as the people around us are. We are not sporting a created image. Our lives and music coincide as one. The only thing we truly wish to have is our fans feeling as if they are a direct part of Black Souls. It is our originality and lack of staying on the beaten path that separates us from the norm. We are always looking for new sounds to create and offer up to the world!

Press Reviews Black Souls Feel My PainOff the top it's got a funky feel. Kinda takes me back a bit. One of the vocal tones reminds me of NINE sorta...and another sounds a bit like Tupac. Delivery is tight...vocal levels are cool...and the styles blend well. Message is straight. It's got a definite feel with the beat and music...it's growin on me.
