Artist description
The Auto Body Experience is a horn-driven rock band from St. Paul, Minnesota. They play off-kilter songs written by bandleader Scott Yoho. The lyrics are often humorous and cover unusual topics, whether they're exploring the tunnels under Disneyland or discovering that your childhood companions were all employed by your dad. Stylistically, the music ranges from cartoon jazz to ska, Latin to guitar-driven pop, and reggae to gospel - often all within the course of one song. |

Artist History
The band formed in 1989. At some unremarked-upon point in the past year it snuck its way through a hole in the garage into a second decade. In that time they've shared the stage with such swell artists as Adrian Belew, Brave Combo, Dread Zeppelin, Moxy Fruvous, and Something Fierce. They've been played on national radio shows like Dr. Demento and Car Talk, and were recently heard on CNBC. Michael Feldman's What D'Ya Know has featured Auto Body Experience CDs as booby prizes. The band has toured across three states, been featured on nearly every Twin Cities radio station, and performed at most local venues. Some places have even had them back a second time.In '89 the band was a quartet. Now it's a septet. There are two prevailing theories about this growth. The first is that it's an attempt to have the number of current members remain higher than the number of members who have quit over the years, maintaining a positive turn-over ratio, thus de-emphasizing the fact that the bandleader is a tyrannical megalomaniac and impossible to work with. The second theory has to do with the continual expansion of the universe, and is just plain silly. Their initial plan of world-wide pop domination has been continually revised over the years. Today they aspire to earn enough at each gig to cover the cost of sending out their promotional postcards. |

Press Reviews
The Star Tribune, Sunday, November 14, 1999:THE AUTO BODY EXPERIENCE, "A Tribute to Carhenge"(Dental Records) Nobody in Minnesota is making grander or sillier pop than Scott Yoho, the persistent and self-effacing guitar hero who would rather craft Velcro-quality hooks and tickle listeners' funny bones than flail away at his fretboard with tawdry arena theatrics. There are precious few songwriters who will tackle such important topics as growing old and grumpy ("I'm Turning into Mr. Wilson"), comic book rip-offs ("X-Ray Specs"), being a "responsible pet walker" ("Crap"), the travails of Charles Darwin ("The Worms Don't Hear") or chronic tardiness ("Tom Is Late"). OK, Yoho's got a better shot of scoring time on the Cartoon Network than on MTV, but that's not a reflection of his wondrous and wide-ranging music skills. "A Tribute to Carhenge" sports peppy ska, righteous reggae, bracing jazz, surprising salsa and loads of sensational rock and pop moments. This CD will remind you of everybody from Frank Zappa ("Head") to the Beatles ("All Your Friends") to Yoho's sorely missed compadres, Something Fierce ("Who Took Your Pipe, Mr. Potato Head?"). And that's not too shabby. The Auto Body Experience performs Friday night at 3M Auditorium in the Minnesota History Center, St. Paul. 5313 -- Tom Surowicz |
