Following a relatively fallow period, the local modern rock scene is heating up once again with a slew of promising young bands, including Overtone. The quartet's recent five-song "Culture" CD indicates that lead guitarist John Rincon, his bassist brother Miguel Rincon, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Chris Recinos and drummer David Dale are very much in touch with the prevailing currents of modern/hard rock. The opening track, "Broken," recalls modern-rock heavyweights Staind, with Recinos intoning sustained notes like Aaron Lewis as Dale thunders behind him. John Rincon constructs big-league chords throughout "Culture" and punctuates the mid-tempo "Here With Me" with a condensed squall of a guitar solo. Overtone often swings for the fences, but the musicians toy with standard formula just enough to keep things interesting, as in the Latin-tinged "Frogstew." Overtone headlines a local-rock showcase tonight.
