Artist History
I, Merritt G. Zimmerman, represent the MZ Destiny, a project band derived of selected participants who indulge their musical talents with my creativity. I basically write the songs, play guitar, drums, and sing. 'Pinwheel People' represents my friends who backed me up during the late 80's with my material. Most of the songs on this particular disc were actual contest entries. Randy McDonald played keyboards on the songs, 'Up in the Skies, Blindman's Effigy, Poltergeist(of Another Kind), and Abstract Gallery. Phil Schieve assisted me playing lead guitar on 'Dear Brother' and 'Topsy Turvy World'. These songs along with my own dubbed material, 'She Walked Out' and 'Shades of Eridanus', I entered into the Billboard Songwriting Contest. I did win a fantastic book about the music business. This occurred in 1989. Another contest entry in '89 was held by a noted Cleveland radio station that plays the oldies. WMJI was in search for a new jingle to advertise themself, so they sponsered a contest. Even though I did not win, myself and everyone that competed, recieved airplay. I had permission from WMJI to present my entry onto disc for your listening. Other songs with supporting friends on this disc are, 'Find a Friend', with Kevin (James) Droll on lead guitar, 'Amnesia' with Becky Boyd on back-up vocals and Phil Schieve again on lead guitar, along with his leads on 'Sunglo Hero'. The remaining bonus tracks were either concepts or rough demos of mine. 'Levi Denim Blues' was an ad idea inspired from Levi's surrealistic animated t.v. commercials during the latter 70's. 'Beatrice' was my first Dante's Inferno intro idea to a musical trilogy I later created. 'Amelia' was also entered into the Billboard, but I only had the crude demo available to present on disc. The 'Instrumental' was something done at the spare of the moment, an experiment with leads on floating rhythms. If you enjoy this project disc, more MZ Destiny material will soon emerge from both past and present.'Children for all Seasons' was my very first attempt to seek public exposure......not for fame, but for fun. Arranged and recorded in 1990, I had demo tapes made from the digital master and dispersed them to local college radio stations. The feedback was interesting. All of them agreed that I should have come out in the sixties. So happens that the sixties are a major influence to my music. Ever since'69, I have great admiration for the unknowns who helped spark the many directions of today's music. My real major in the art fields is visual arts. I especially enjoy surrealism, fantasy, sci-fi, and visionary, I even earned my BA in this field. The guitar and drums I picked up in the 70's. Eventually I started to improve and began converting my poetry into song....ad-libbing the lyrics came later. I mostly write songs to express my feelings about life, hope, and love. Imagery and rhyme schemes I like to play with..., almost like painting a picture. I try to emphasize the message in my songs when I sing. The three friends involved on 'Chidren of all Seasons' are Randy McDonald, who plays keys throughout the tape. Salvatore Zingale and Dave Lawler, who assisted me on the song, 'No Sooner or Later'. Salvatore added the right 'kerplunk' leads I was searching for and Dave's voice sang along with mine. These friends and many others have included me with their projects and jams also. Besides more MZ Destiny material, there is still more to come. I hope you find my music uplifting. |
