Press Reviews
Jones Trailer plays soundtracks for ghost towns: taking a cue from modern lounge-folk gods Tom Waits and Chris Isaak, maestro Ben Ratliff creates sparse, spacious songs perfect for chasing tumbleweeds and getting a noseful of desert dust. "Ride the Comet" has Ratliff enuciating--but actually, the expressive guitars do more of the talking than he does. "Bucket of Love" has a bossa nova beat, "So Low" drones on like a bored train-hopping hobo and moves slow as molasses, and "Girl Next Door" veers a traditional country ballad into spaghetti western territory (complete with surprise cross-dressing finale). "40,000 Miles"--a folky western rocker featuring a shredded tire and a very upset woman -- could have been an Eagles throwaway. The standout song on the demo,"Ancient Chinese Secret" hints that Ratliff is more a guitar man than a lead singer* -- it's a string-action-packed instrumental that even your picky dad might say sounded like the string work of Crosby, Stills and Nash. |
