Artist History
Eyekon was formed in 1995 under the name MINDWATCH, which was the remaining part of the deathmetal band DEVOURED. The lineup then was Victor Takala, Bjarne Gudmundsson, Niko Salomaa, Mattias Lindblad and Micke Oretoft.1995 two demo songs were recorded, Moonlight Transit and Lady Baroque. Bjarne left the band due to lack of interest for the music. Shortly thereafter, Mikael left too because the absence of a drummer. He was replaced by Stefan Guteklint. 1996 Nico was replaced by Anders Hortin on Keyboards. After a few months we found a drummer, Joakim Borén, a friend of Anders & Stefan. In the beginning of 1997 Stefan left the band for another musical direction. Guillaume joined the band as the new bass player. In December a three song demo was recorded, Inside Out, Virgin & the Rose and Freedom. From February '98 to August '98 we had a long pause due to lack of reharsing place. After the reunion Aug '98 Mattias left the band for his own songwriting. Victor took over the lead vocals and the band name was changed to EYEKON. A new musical direction was taking form. |

Press Reviews
Review from Undertow. EYEKON - 4 Song Demo This progressive metal band hails from Sweden and they sent me their four song demo CD. Eyekon is a band that debuts here with 4 strong songs. Their main influence is without doubt Fates Warning. Their music is melodic, intense and warm sounding. In the instrumental department things sound good but singer Victor Takala could use some vocal training. He has lots of potential but here and there he sounds a bit whiny, something a good producer or some vocal lessons could take care of. The production of the demo is good. The only complaint I have is that the vocals are bit to up front sometimes. Overall we can say that Eyekon is a band with potential and I am looking forward to hear more of this band. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Review from Through Different Eyes. Eyekon - demo Swedish newcomers Eyekon, is here with their four tracked CD single demo. In their mail to me it says that their influences are bands like Sting, YES, Rush, Fates Warning and Dream Theaer. I can hear a lot of Fates Warning for sure, but not very much stuff reminding of YES. The sound of this demo is great, maybe with the exception the drums which sound a bit "too close". That also goes for the vocals occasionally. But the music itself does not sound bad at all. The CD is recorded during two different sessions (April -99 and September -99). This band is on the rise if you ask me, since this material sound as good as it does. What I have to complain or advice about, are the vocals. They are not catastrophical or anything, but with a bit improvement with these, Eyekon is a ace of spades on the music scene of progressive metal. Great stuff! ------------------------------------------------------------------------Review from Edge of Time, Progressive Metal Magazine. EYEKON "Eyekon" demo Eyekon is a progressive rock band from Stockholm, Sweden, and judging from this four song demo, they have a good deal of potential. Taking inspiration from the the usual suspects (Dream Theater, Yes, Rush, and Fates Warning) and some less expected artists (Sting), Eyekon tends to stress the subtle and warm approach of songsmithing at the expense of in-your-face playing, ridiculously gratuitous solos and the needless heaviness plaguing so much progressive metal and neo-prog nowadays. The music is dominated by clean guitar tones (the sound frequently employed by Fates Warning and early Marillion), smooth bass and percussion interaction (with some nice syncopated off-beats), and warm, subtle keys. The second track actually begins with a Sting vibe - clean, emotive guitar lines and a heavily accented bass line with tight percussion. The music is never overtly heavy or noisy, but always "just right" - emotional and inviting. The vocalist Victor Takal could use some work (his voice is a little whiny and nasal), and I would like to see some lower, more hoarse vocal lines in the music, but his voice is far from from horrible - it just needs some work. Overall this is a fine demo, with a clean production, well written compositions and a warm, emotional atmosphere. I anticipate this band's next effort. (JS)------Brave Words and Bloody KnucklesCanada's #1 Metal MagazineCirculation 5000 world-wideIssue #41 July 2000 p. 54Technically proficient but never over-indulgent progressive rock from a scene that is best known for death metal. Elements of Rush are nourished in an album which recalls Paradise Lost's Host album, or perhaps even the Tuonela album by Amorphis. Tracks like "For Whom it May Concern" and "As Black As My Soul" are gimmick-free, beautifully crafted pieces of musical majesty. To simply labels these sonic sculptures as songs seems misgiving, for endless adjustments through divine inspiration has obviously been made. Unfortunately Eyekon are incomplete at the moment; the band needs a bass player. Any and all are welcome to apply. (8 out of 10)I can't wait! J------- |
