Artist description
As both a soloist and collaborative artist, Ms. Lau enjoys performing music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Most recently she was featured in the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Young Artists Series April concert, The Music of George Crumb. She had the opportunity to work with the celebrated American composer (George Crumb), performing his Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for amplified flute, cello and piano. Ms. Lau’s many awards include: National Finalist for the Canadian Music Competitions, Winner of the Student Artist Programme Competition in Cincinnati and Winner of the Reginald Bedford Piano Competition. She has appeared as returning guest artist for the Duet Club, as soloist with Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra and McMaster Chamber Orchestra, has been featured on the McMaster Celebrity Noon Hour Series and has been broadcast on Public Radio in the United States, performing Canadian works. Ms. Lau has also participated as an Artist-Student at the Adamant Music School, and as coach-accompanist for the Opera Theatre of Lucca in Italy. Recent master class performances include Marc Durand, Robert McDonald, Cecile Ousset, and John Perry, while influential teachers in Canada include June Caskey, Aino Waldin, and Gwen Beamish. This year she is the recipient of two awards from the Women’s Art Association of Canada and is currently researching on transculturation and Afro-Cuban rhythms in the piano music of Ernesto Lecuona.
Ms. Lau holds a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Eugene and Elizabeth Pridonoff; she also taught courses in undergraduate theory and musicianship, and undertook studies in analysis and Schenkerian theory. Prior to her American studies, she was a student of Valerie Tryon at McMaster University, where she completed her undergraduate degree. At present Ms. Lau is finishing the Artist Diploma in Piano Performance and Pedagogy with Peter Longworth at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. |
