Artist History Calling himself "musician, artist, writer, and bad influence," The Hesh mixes up his favorite things -- life, liberty, spirituality, and his experiences -- into his own idiosyncratic brand of keyboard-based, lyric-intensive rock. When playing solo, The Hesh uses the piano as accompaniment to his vocals, the same way singer-songwriter-guitarists would use their guitars; when in a band, The Hesh likes to surround himself with crunchy guitars and a tight rhythm section. However, he cautions against lumping him into the same stylistic category as other, better-known singer-songwriter-keyboard players, solo or otherwise. Born in New York City, The Hesh, 37, has lived in many different places including New Jersey, Israel, Long Island, Boston, and Philadelphia; he is currently based in Los Angeles. He has played in assorted bands of different genres, including rock, blues, r&b, reggae, 1970s-era disco, cover/tribute acts, and his own original "soul-punk-rock-r&b" band, in the New York-New Jersey-Philly corridor and in Israel. A self-taught musician, The Hesh says he inherited his musical bug from his maternal grandfather, who was the cantor of a synagogue in Wilmington, DE; his mother, who sang and played viola and cornet; and his father, a Holocaust survivor of Transylvanian origin who passed down a long line of Hasidic melodies.
