The Beautiful OnesBiographical InformationThe Beautiful Ones is the brainchild of Ako Mitchell. Ako’s interest in music blossomed at an early age with piano studies beginning at age 7 and a music composition award at age 9. Later, at the Chicago Music College, Ako was twice awarded a scholarship in music theory and piano, the first award coming at age twelve. Ako started his first band at age thirteen though he became deeply involved in music in college at Northwestern. He formed the well-respected folk-rock band Yegg, which was featured on Northwestern’s acclaimed Niteskool recording project. For the past five years, Ako has fascinated Midwest audiences with his powerful vocals and infectious energy as part of the power-pop outfit, Brando’s Charm. As part of this group, Ako has appeared in-studio on WGN Television, JBTV, the Nationally Syndicated “Mancow’s Morning Madhouse,” and Chicago’s Q101.Ako’s new solo self-released Please remove me from this alias, reflects an introspection and witty lyricism in his observations of daily life set in a contemporary sonic context. The single Bright Lights has been featured on WXRT RADIO in Chicago and has received rave reviews including one from Chicago Tribune on-line.In October of 1999, Ako was asked to appear as a solo artist in a showcase for Sony Music USA as selected by Millennium Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Wright Entertainment. For more information, please contact AKOMUSIC@YAHOO.COM. |

Press Reviews
The Beautiful Ones "Bright Lights" By Lisa Phillips Sound and style: On this nice two-song demo from a presumably upcoming full-length debut titled "Please remove me from this alias," former Yegg and current Brando's Charm member Ako tries the solo thing. His style is reminiscent of Daniel Lanois' solo work and even some Howard Jones, but with more soundscape effects and electronic layering than the sort of straightforward pop/rock you might expect. Then again, I think unidentifiable bleeps and boinks are a good thing. Ako's voice is sweet and mellow, so the lyrical content sort of whisps by you; it seems to be about modern life and feelings and such, but it's ultimately the music that holds your interest. This recording also boasts a mostly understated guest appearance by Matt Walker of Cupcake and Filter on percussion. Recording quality: Lovingly produced. Great clarity and depth, especially in the vocals. Bottom line: After a few listens, I still have to wonder, "What exactly is he trying for here?" which, to me, is a sign of imminent genius. |
