Artist History
In 1988, drummer Brenden Peace posted an ad on the wall of Phantom Records in Sydney. Guitarist/singer Billy Hughes answered that ad and together they formed the shortlived "King Pest’. Whilst still underage they played a handful of pub shows but disbanded a year later when their bass player was sent to boarding school to remove him from the bands undesirable influence.By 1994 things had changed. Billy and Brenden had been busy with a variety of bands but were looking for a new direction. Together they formed downtime and with bass player James Meek they set about forging a reputation for themselves. After six months of slogging it out in Sydney pubs, Downtime was introduced to the world in 1995 by way of the Big Day Out. An impressive performance was quickly followed by equally impressive debut album which entered the Alternative charts at number 7.Since that memorable debut they have continued to impress audiences with their blazing live performances. In that time they have toured Australia and New Zealand with international acts such as Suicidal Tendencies, Sex Pistols, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Monster Magnet, All, Channel Zero, Agnostic Front, L7, Conflict, Def Tones, Fu Manchu, Sick Of It All, Goldfinger, etc and appeared at festivals such as Alternative Nation and Warped.Downtime have worked steadily to consolidate their success and have developed a reputation for consistently impressive recordings. Their work has appeared on various Australian compilations as well as American and British compilations.Management and label changes together with the recent addition of new bass player Dave Dunn has seen downtime reinvigorated and busy writing for their next album due for release later this year. |
