Artist History
Makina was formed in 1990 from the ashes of a project called Makina Negra. At the beginning, Makina only had songs in spanish. After making several line-up changes and adopting a more serious attitude and realizing the worldwide limits of keeping their material in Spanish, Makina began writing in English. After many shows, the label Lejos Del Paraíso signed the band, because they were impressed by Makina´s potent shows. In 1991 was released Makina´s first album, titled "Dilemma," which had small distribution in México and the south of the USA. After the support tour for "Dilemma," Paul left the band to form his own band. Paul was quickly replaced by former Cripta vocalist Carlos Alejandro, who only stood in the band briefly. At the same time Hans left the band due to musical differences. The new members were ex-Acrostic men Xavier Herrera (vocals and guitar) and Janel de Polanco (lead guitar). With this new lineup Makina moved to a more brutal and technical style. The aggressive riffs of Janel and the potent throat of Xavier gave a new dimension to the music of Makina. In 1994, with this new lineup, Makina released their second album, titled "Anabiosis," through Rockotitlán, a subsidiary of Sony. For this record Makina recieved more support, which included the videoclip "Nymphomaniac," which was transmitted in MTV`s "Headbangers." Makina crossed the ocean in 1995 to embark on a successful Spring tour in Spain, France, Holland and Belgium, all without the benefit of official distribution of their recordings in Europe. This tour was a great success for Makina by increasing the number of their european fans as well as the demand for Makina`s albums. Back home they played several large Mexican Festivals, continued drawing a devoted following of 2,000 rabid fans to headlining shows throughout México and took Texas by storm with their first United States appearance at 1995´s South by Southwest convention. In 1996 Makina was signed by Manicomio Records, a subsidiary of Polygram. PolyGram´s distribution deal with Makina is a demonstration of previously unheard support to a Mexican band of this extreme nature by a major label whose roster includes some of the biggest names in music throughout the world. After the deal, Makina released their long awaited third album, titled "RED." "RED," without a doubt is the best and most mature Makina album with intelligent lyrical messages (tackling heavy topics such as the destruction of nature by man and the destruction of man by man). "RED," recieved more support than any of the previous albums. RED recieved world wide distributions, and the release of a single called "Chorizo." Also Makina spawned two videoclips "Terror" and "Chorizo," and did a lot of shows to promote the new album. "RED," confirmed Makina as one of the best metal bands in Latin America. In 1997 Makina had another lineup change. Janel decided to leave the band due to personal differences, but this didn`t affect the band. Makina is currently writing new material for the forthcoming album which may be available next year through Manicomio. Makina has played with the following bands: Sepultura, Sick Of It All, Criminal, Slayer, Deicide, A.N.I.M.A.L., Iron Maiden, Mantra, Fear Factory, Negu Gorriak, Mercyful Fate, D.R.I., Etsaiak. Napalm Death. Entombed, Angeles Del Infierno, Brutal Truth, Sacred Reich, Kreator, Sodom, Rata Blanca, Malevolent Creation, Pantera and Anthrax. |
