Artist History
The Adagio Trio was founded in 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kathryn Daniels, Michael Daniels, and Linda Grieser, the founding members, have performed regularly for recitals, religious services, weddings, and receptions. In 1990 Michael took the position of Co-Principal Cellist with the Virginia Symphony, and the Daniels moved to Norfolk, Virginia. The trio continued to work together, however, and released their first CD “Stillpoint” in 1997. In October 1999, the trio released their second CD “Sanctuary”. The unique combination of harp, flute, and cello provides a fitting compliment for meditation or relaxation. The trio, for the most part, creates their own arrangements and uses familiar tunes such as "Ashokan Farewell", "Shenandoah", "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring", and "On Eagle's Wings". The group has been featured on public radio stations throughout the country including ones in Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Oregon, and California. Their music has been featured numerous times on WHRO radio in Hampton Roads and WGUC-FM in Cincinnati. In the first six weeks, the “Stillpoint” album sold over 1000 copies. Their albums have evoked many positive responses from people across the country. |

Press Reviews
"Stillpoint" is a delightful new CD featuring Virginia Symphony cellist Michael Daniels, his wife Kathryn Daniels on flute, and Cincinnati-based harpist Linda Grieser. This is a vast reservoir of musical tranquility, ranging from the Welsh "Ash Grove" to Jay Ungar's "Ashokan Farewell," Satie's "Gymnopedie No.1", and transcriptions of pieces by Debussy, Vivaldi, Saint-Saens, and numerous folk tunes. The disc has become a huge favorite with WHRO-FM audiences... It is an enchanting disc not to be missed. Raymond Jones--Virginia Daily Press “When symphony cellist Michael Daniels, his wife Kathryn (flute) and Cincinnati-based harpist Linda Grieser released their first album, Stillpoint, in 1997, it immediately became a local favorite. (The folks at WHRO-FM deserve part of the credit for giving it ample air time.) Last year they released another , called Sanctuary. It’s hard to say which one’s better. They’re both terrific, from start to finish. My favorite tune on Stillpoint is “Ashokan Farewell,” the piece that was used so effectively in Ken Burns’s Civil War documentary. But it’s difficult to beat the trio’s rendition of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” on Sanctuary. The piece opens with a wonderful solo by Michael Daniels, and when he’s finished Kathryn takes her turn. The contrast between the textures of the cello and the flute brings out the dual quality of the piece – its flesh and its spirit, if you will. Indeed, it is one of the most striking versions of the song that I have ever heard. The album also includes “Shenandoah,” “Morning Has Broken,” the Sarabande from Bach’s Suite in C and more than a dozen other tranquil yet musically rich pieces. (Note: Don’t use this only as background music; you’ll miss a lot.)”Tom Robotham, Hampton Roads Portfolio Weekly, December 19, 2000 |
