Artist History
This was the plan. After more than a decade of writing songs and playing in a succession of bands - together and separately - George Furtney, Greg Smith and Darren Hill wanted a fresh start. No musical boundaries, no recording deadlines. They knew the music they liked, so the only thing was to play it. Often.Recruiting drummer Bradford Clifford, the band set up residence at the Duke of Gloucester, and spent a year competing with one jukebox, six TVs, fourteen taps, two dart leagues, and a pool table. They weren't aping a rite of passage, paying dues in their own Marquee Club, serving exile in their own Hamburg. They were exercising their musical muscles, working through lessons old and new.Along the way they tapped a great river of rock'n' roll. They found their rhythm in the swell, they tangled with the eddies, and learned to carry the audience with the current. More than just keeping their heads above water, the band developed a sound that churns and boils, pitches and calms, with a n energy that washes through the soul like a powerful, body-moving memory. And they wrote some songs that will knock you on your ass.Since they all hailed from the same county in southwestern Ontario, they called themselves Oxford County Circus. A nod to shared roots, both musical and geographical, and a signpost for their approach to rock 'n' roll. |
