Artist description
With more than 10 years of musical activity, initiated as percussionist in a small acoustic project between friends, intitled Anderson Council. Still in the ends of 80's he made "home" records in an experimental audio project with Paulo Fernandes, the current writer of NEON's lyrics, it was a specie of "punk noise" intitled Mort'D'Eus, appealing again to acoustic instruments but introducing already the first experiences with "samplers" through magnetic tape assemblies. In 1988, NeKryXe joins a new group, the Despojos Rurais, as a vocalist. In the same year, he was invited to play bass guitar for Cativos da Crux, but later in this band he changed to vocals again. During some time, he participated in various groups as drummer, but finishing to leave temporarily the musical scene after finding himself in a total incompatibility with the portuguese rock. In 1989, together with Miguel Ribeiro (Frame), extremely influenced for the sonorous wave generated by the 4AD label, specifically by Pieter Nooten and Clan of Xymox, initiates Zurich Pound in Plastik Welt, his first totally electronic experience, that turns NeKryXe into one of the "techno" pioneers in Portugal, but their first promo "Zur.W.One" was ignored by the editors. Passing the years, the musician starts to explore with more persistence the capacities of computer composition and "sampler" programming, with a rhythmic consistency running away from the dance music standards, giving origin in 1997 to his first album "a:tsizem" under the NEON project. The first NEON CD was a kind of memorandum, congregating the different formulas of transporting an explicit aggressiveness, through virtualized sounds, featuring a strong use of "samplers", does present a mixture of catchy dance sounds, aggressive and pumping techno drum beats, hard and full motion drum'n'bass attacks. NeKryXe does seldom employ vulgar and commercial sounds and he rather explots the opportunities provided by the sampler, including some more noisy and industrial influences as well. Easily this album caused a great impact for it irreverence, originality and ambitious technique, conquering immediately an unanimous bracket from critics becoming one reference album in that year in Portugal. As consequence, NEON was invited by the Midem for a live presentation of its work in the Cannes Festival, becoming officially in the first Portuguese participation in the biggest worldwide event of the fonographic industry. |

Press Reviews
- Based in Viana do Castelo North of Portugal, NEON is as far removed as you can be from dance world and its influences. His computer is his link to the outside world. NEON's hardcore trance is uncompromising. (Midem Daily News 1/97) - Hot dance techno from Portugal. The urgency isn't just in the beat, it's in the dark synth figures and processed vocal samples. The cymbal tracks sound kinda dated, but NeKryXe keeps the mixes moving, nowhere moreso than in "Sick-Leave", a 160bpm tribal drumfest, and "Forced Feedback", which at 188bpm displays all the inexorable logic of an oncoming express train. (Jim Aikin - Keyboard US 7/98) |
