Artist History
Formed in early 1996 as the Delusions, Boston based band National Speedball League are purveyors of straight-ahead, meat and potatoes rock and roll. Fed up with the growing numbers of underfed, tea drinking, clove cigarette smoking, indie rockers crossing the boards in Boston clubs, the band’s members resolved to take a different path. "We knew the kids were looking for something else. Most of them had not heard an in tune guitar, except on their parent’s Beatles records," says Dr. Doberman. Fueled by red meat and Budweiser and inspired by Boston rock predecessors like GANG GREEN, THE OUTLETS and THE TITANICS, NSL tuned up those guitars and spent the spring and summer of 1996 developing their sound and crafting their songs. "Nonne Quid Habes?" the band’s first tape, was released in the fall of 1996. Fourteen songs of emotionally charged, Marshall powered rock and roll, the tape received positive reviews in the Boston music press. In the early spring of 1998 NSL began recording for a new project, tentatively called "Champions of Rock." Among the songs recorded were crowd favorites, Holding, Ashmont Train, and They Don’t Write ‘Em Like They Used To. In performance the band has become infamous in Boston’s politically correct arts and music circles. Their provocative lyrics and confrontational style of performance have earned the band a devoted, almost fanatical following. "They just speak to me at a real emotional level," says longtime fan Howie. The band is often taken to task for the strong opinions contained in their lyrics. Howie adds, "It takes a lot of courage in the ‘90’s to write songs that glorify drugs, misogyny, and right wing politics." In an era of apathy, many find refreshing a band that is unafraid to take a stand.Asked about the goals of the group for the future, guitarist Tom sums it up, "To get the new stuff out and then we’re going to hit the road and play until the wheels fall off the van." |
