Press Reviews
Sometimes the best music is hard to classify. Such is the case with Shillglen, the San Diego based quintet, that has been performing around town for the past few years opening for national acts like John Taylor, formerly of Duran Duran and the Candyskins. Through the combination of haunting music, Greg Laswell's unique nicotine stained vocals, and a tight rhythm section, Shillglen's new album may have arrived onto the San Diego scene just in time to save us from the pop-punk onslaught. Sometimes I Feel offers true diversity with songs ranging from the ultra-eerie "Woodman" and the Radioheadesque "Mr. Vender Machine," to the catchy, sanguine "Untitled." The guitar work of Chad Lansford and Justin Skeesuck is exceptional, providing a varied backdrop for the vocals and buoyant melodies throughout the album. The unique harmonies add another interesting dimension to the group's music without seeming pretentious or overused. The band also boasts a surprising lyrical maturity. Sometimes I Feel is a beautifully crafted exploration of the relationships between emotion, man, and God. Perhaps the most refreshing component of Shillglen's music is their truly unique sound. One gets the impression that their songs come directly from their souls and not some music industry mold used for chart topping alternative hits. Although for some reason, the band's biography says "Classification - Alternative Rock," Sometimes I Feel should actually be filed under great original music. - By Jason Riggs, The Weekly (San Diego) |
