Press Reviews
By Jim Correale
(Published in the East Boston Sun Transcript on March 23, 2001.)
More than 200 people, almost all of them teenagers, showed up at the Savio gym last Friday evening to hear live music played by their peers. Despite security concerns, which delayed the show’s start by 30 minutes, Band Night went off without a problem.
The lineup for the event included seven bands consisting of mostly young people from East Boston, Winthrop and Revere. Each of the groups has at least one Savio student among its members.
In addition, Medea Connection -- a local trio whose members include a pair of Savio teachers -- performed.
The idea of a concert showcasing students’ bands was first floated two years ago, but for various reasons was not able to take flight until this year. Even as the scheduled starting time approached, it looked as though the event was about to be canceled, as the police detail requested for the evening didn’t show up.
Station 7 did eventually send some officers to the site, and after a while the police seemed amused that they were needed for such a quiet crowd. Not a single incident was reported.
"People always think that kids can’t be trusted to have an event like this," said Medea Connection guitarist Dan Brockman, who organized the evening along with Savio senior Dan Staples and the Salesian Boys & Girls Club. Brockman said the crowd was "well-behaved, despite the expectations."
The bands that participated were Breakdown, Down to Zero, Forsaken, Distorted Truth, Push Over, Rozzi and Days Gone By.
Savio senior Mike Datta said, "This was a good opportunity for all the bands to showcase themselves and gain experience."
Each group was allotted 20-25 minutes to play its set and then the stage was cleared for the next act. Staples and classmate John Dudley deejayed for the crowd between bands.
Some of the music was heavy metal, some was punk and some was hard to classify, but all of the musicians got a chance to take the stage and play songs they’d been practicing for weeks, months, or even years.
"We had a chance to hear music from other people who are talented," said Savio freshman Brittany Casasanta. "I think it inspired me to try harder in starting my band."
Scattered amongst the teens were parents who came to see their kids perform. A couple of dads were seen videotaping bands while, not far away, young people with studded jackets and spiked hair bobbed their heads to the music.
One of the most talented musicians on display was Tony Issa, a Savio senior who sings and plays guitar for the band Rozzi -- a title that pays homage to his home neighborhood of Roslindale.
When asked what it was like to play in front of classmates and teachers, Issa said, "It was what I was always waiting to do ever since I stepped foot in [Savio]. It was very welcoming, and I was anxious to play."
Senior Juli Peterson said the night "was an all-out success. I hope this sets the stage for more band nights in Savio's future."
