Artist History
LOGJAM:
3 people: Danny Krieger, Chris Lopes, and Sara P. Smith.Danny was born in N.Y. and then moved to L.A. as a kid. Chris is from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Sara grew up in the desert of Tucson Arizona.
Sara and Chris met in college days in Boston. They and 10 other musicians lived in a big house. Chris and Sara made a band with Jeff Parker and Ted Sirota called The Last Kwartet. The Last Kwartet moved to Chicago. They liked playing the music of Ornette Coleman and Thelonius Monk and each other. Sara and Jeff went on to make bands called Isotope 217 and the Chicago Underground Orchestra.
In between all that Sara moved out to L.A. for a year. She hooked up with Danny. He sang and played his guitar. He put records of The Band on the turntable. Sara was inspired and songwrote. She returned to Chicago. Danny soon follwed.
These 3 moved in together in 1995. In Chicago.
They lived and played in their living room.
Then they started playing weekly at the Logan Beach Cafe in Logan Square. They made a recording in their living room and sent it to some friends.
1 owned a record label called Action Box Records in L.A. He liked it and flew the three out to MAKE A RECORD. Chris had never been OUT WEST before. He said, I can’t believe it’s so hot when it’s cold.
IT WAS JANUARY.
Chris quit the band and moved back East.
No lie: immediately following Chris’ decision, their landlord axed the huge trees in the yard, cut them up into logs and left them in their yard!! Once the wood had cooled, Logjam regrouped for a brief and enjoyable bit, adding the wonderful Dan Fleagle (drums) and the creative sportster Matthew Lux (bassist of Isotope 217 and Tranquility Bass).
Well... Sara and Danny each had to find some sun: goodbye Chicago, goodbye boys.
Nowadays, Danny is playing, recording, and touring with both the Mollys and his own band: The Fluffingtons. He lives in Tucson where he is a welcome feature of the blues scene. He was recently inducted into the Arizona blues Hall of Fame. Sara is also living in Tucson where she is experiencing the sweet uses of adversity (as The Bard put it): finding ...tounges in trees. books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.
Fun Facts: Sara has been honored to perform with Dizzy Gillespie, The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, Jesse James and the Cow Pies, and the Tuscon Symphony Orchestra. Sara and Danny have performed with and love Sam Taylor Jr., Viggo Mortensen, and Duke McVinnie.
