Artist description
From San Mateo, California, drist brings a heavy-driven, passionate sound with thought provoking lyrical content. Their debut album, "Bitter Halo" reflects this in delivering their signature sound and displaying the depth of its front man, Tyson Yen. When asking Tyson about the origin of "Bitter Halo" he explains, "I wanted the title of the record to summarize the messages contained in the entire album. While writing this record most of my thoughts were based on the notion that people often times hold up ideals or beliefs derived from negativity. "Bitter Halo" encompasses this idea."
After 5 years of writing music and playing shows, drist signed a recording agreement in July of 2002 with Spunout Records, which is headed up by Steve Harwell, singer of Smash Mouth. In August, producer Ulrich Wild (Deftones, P.O.D., Incubus, Taproot and more) was hired to remix drist’s self-produced album titled, "Bitter Halo." Ulrich was quoted during the remix by saying, "seriously, this is quickly becoming my favorite band in a long, long time."
What’s next: The band will be routing out to the east coast in April.
Recent happenings: Recorded new track "Normalcy" with Ulrich Wild.
Songs "Sterile" and "Fallen" placed in upcoming movie Inhabited, starring Malcolm McDowell and Megan Gallagher.

Press Reviews
San Francisco Peninsula-based Drist's debut full-length recording has been a long time coming but the band has nailed this release with pinpoint precision. Produced by Guy Higbey at Locomoto Studios, Bitter Halo has the complete package, oftentimes working with a distinct split personality. On one hand the band works with a streamlined, straight to the commercial radio sound that moves at a slower to mid-tempo speed with somewhat wailing style vocals. However, the band also hammers some riffs well, especially towards the middle point of this disc, offering up plenty of crunch and heavier structures. Featuring guitarist Brian da Motta, bassist Dave Pearl, drummer Chris Koenig, and vocalist Tyson Yen, Drist has opened another door with this release, a well executed piece that will most likely open plenty of new ears to their sound.
As stated above, this disc offers both sides of the spectrum with tunes like "Isn't It Something", with it's lighter strumming and melody, working at the streamlined end while heavier tunes like "Undercarriage", which opens with a drum / bass combo and pops into a solid groove, and "Carrion Baggage", which opens with a start stop feel and bass underline, punctuating Drist's obvious metal roots.
Drist has produced a solid winner and should easily catapult this band into a whole new level with their flexible, do-it-all sound, style and heavy melodies. The band also included their popular tune from their last recording sessions, "Sterile", which all but defines the Drist approach to their music with an emphasis on the heavier guitar work but streaming the overall sound to the more accessible. This disc is well done and really a good addition to the collection.
