Artist description
Professional harpsichordist, clavichordist, organist; available for solo or continuo performances. My production goal is to use entire takes or large sections wherever possible, preserving the feeling of actual performance and improvisatory discovery. I'm a fan of the declamatory and spontaneous musicians from the 1920's to 1940's...Cortot, Rachmaninoff, Casals, Kreisler, etc. Their performances recorded as 78-rpm sides offer direct "live" explorations of the music: wonderful models of communication. Therefore, in my own recordings I do not "iron out" the irrational moments of interpretive whimsy. Every take was a fresh adventure, and then I selected the best results later...some unintended wrinkles add charm. Nor have I removed the incidental noises of the instrument's action. Irregular grit is natural, like the consonants in speech: an essential and individual part of the delivery. (If a recording is too thoroughly sanitized through editing, it ceases to seem real and it becomes boring...shiny yet dull.) |

Press Reviews
"I'm very impressed with both the playing and the sound of the instrument - I haven't heard many clavichord recordings (who has?) but this one really sounds much better than others, and the playing is fantastic! I'm inspired to hunt down a clavichord now." - J Addleman / "I love the concept of those three discs, short songs mostly, vast time scale, great sound, intimate mood, selective and intelligent use of bebung, varied musical styles. Seems like significant recordings in the clavier world to me. Intimate, personal, that's what the sound of the clavichord makes me think of." - J Morrison |
