Press Reviews
"Cicada combine the brutality of hardcore metal with the groove of nu metal. They make this work because of a genuine fire in their attitude." (Malcome Dome, Metal Hammer April 2000). "So far, the best tape I've heard. Cicada play emotional, heavy music that takes the best elements of bands like Will Haven and Fear Factory and adds into the mix a good dose of thrashy hardcore to make a rather smart sound. The quality of this tape is excellent thus matching the high standard of music being played. An excellent example of how good music should be! ***** " (Graham Finney, Intoxicated zine 13). "Anyone to comment on Lancashire based four piece Cicada so far, seems to have gone immediately for their sense of groove and, although I'd rather pick out their melodic vocal and their incredible sense of guitar power too, I'm of the opinion certainly, that this band need looking at and quickly. You see, I may be a little confused as to what I'm actually listening to here (I guess, seven songs from their full 13 track CD demo which by rights should be available now ?) but I certainly left the tape feeling as impressed as I have by any UK. band in the last few months. The band seem fearful of admitting to who does what, (Dom and Ron remain mere names on a page) but when their mix of Pantera and Will Haven nastiness kicks in you don't really need to know who's who because the songs leap off the tape and give you one like a bastard ! Take "Blunt". It might at first seem like just another shouty H. C number, yet the vocals come over more like Matt Pollock (Kill 2 This ) and you soon realise that you're in for more than just one style. "Inhibition" proves that the band has plenty of ballast - on the metal side of H/C, it weaves between V.O.D. and someone like Snapcase - but the grand daddy of them all..........., is "List Of Air". Order your copy today and crank it up ! Would someone please get this band on a stage in the capital fast?" (A.Barrett - Fire Fight Zine No7, March 2000) Cicada was born near Manchester from a bunch of friends and newspaper ads, and wrote and rehearsed in the attic of a house. After three years of rehearsels, writing songs and learning covers (and getting evicted from the house for noise pollution!) they began their assault on the UK. The quality of the CD these guys have put together staggers me and, apart from a flirtation with NOFX's 'The Decline', they haven't been off my car stereo (where I do most of my listening). The opening of the first track 'Blunt' sounds like they recorded it in someone's basement on a Walkman or something, with it's tinny-sounding drums. After about 15 seconds this intro was blown to bits by a guitar/drum attack of very high quality, soon backed up by Tony's top sounding vocals. These guys are heavy, along the lines of VOD and sometimes Machine Head. Uncompromising is the name of the game with their CD and they never let up in their audio assault, even during their quieter moments. Everything fits together well; the vocals match the rhythm and timing of the tracks, the guitars sound crunchy and loud and the drumming is tight. Recorded at 'Assembly Line Studios' and released through 'Holier Than Thou' records, the 13-track CD takes the listener through a 55 minute sonic trip into the deepest crevasses of the human condition. You can buy it from HMV London and Liverpool, Exit Skate Shop, Ambicus Records, Polar Bear Records and Varley's Music, all in Manchester, as well as the address at the top of the review. (Meltdown magazine - Abo's review) "A superbly executed seven tracker from a Manchester based four piece who cite such bands as Pantera and Vision of Disorder as influences - and it shows. Not every song here quite hits the mark, but when they do get it right - most notably on opener "Blunt" - the result is impossible to ignore. Crunching grooves and raw, melodic vocals perfectly compliment each other. I'll be keeping an eye on this lot, that's for fucking sure ****. (Steve Bowers - Underdog 4.) Cicada (FKA Greedo) appreciate how to develop a natural groove... the songs on their five track CD are very strong" (Malcom Dome, Metal hammer July 1999). |
