Artist description
"At Home With Alp" is the debut release by Alp, the solo project of Roger Horberry, long-time member of the highly regarded group O Yuki Conjugate. Recorded in 1997 in Amsterdam and processed last year in London, this album bridges the gap between OYC's ethno-ambient trance and something based on electrical and mechanical sound sources. Roger described what inspired him to create the album: "I used to sit in my flat at night and listen to all the little noises around me - the heating, the washing machine, a kettle boiling, etc. I wondered if there was any beauty in all this sonic loose change." He put contact microphones on every noise-producing object he could, and began recording sounds. By isolating and capturing these domestic noises he discovered a whole world that exists behind the quiet but constant roar of everyday life. "What a surprise - there's a multitude of stuff going on all the time around us that I'd never heard before." He returned to England and created "At Home With Alp" from these raw source materials. "Basically it's tiny sounds made big. It's the constant barrage we don't notice, either because it's too quiet or too familiar. It's amazing what a pan of potatoes on the stove actually sounds like up close, or a photocopier, or the whole orchestra of sounds created by a radiator." The album moves back and forth between minimalism and ambient music without staying too long in either category. Noise headz and fans of O Yuki Conjugate find common ground with Alp's album. |
