Artist History
Shawn Bass, and Shaun Stecklein, started Windell Greene in 1992. A WSUP Radio DJ once described the sound as " If a bus load of nuns was in a head on collision with Sonic Youth, and Mudhoney's tour bus, the sound would be Windell Greene." The original lineup was Shawn Bass on vocals and guitar, Shaun Stecklein on Bass, Karen Ringelstetter on vocals, and Chris Dunbar on drums. Matt Nessler replaced Chris Dunbar, after Chris pegged a cop with a snowball that had a rock in it, and ended up in prison for a couple years. Mac Ahnen was then asked to join after Shaun Stecklein moved to Texas, to live with a girl he met on the net. Shaun Stecklein has now moved back to be their second guitar player. Karen Ringelstetter has left the band to further her education. Windell Greene's lineup is now Shawn Bass on vocals and guitar, Shaun Stecklein on guitar, Mac Ahnen on bass, and Matt Nessler on drums. The band has played many places in the Madison, WI area, and has developed a loyal fanbase. Some of the clubs they ha ve played in are as follows: O'Cayz corral, The Inferno, Mango Grill, The Regent St. Retreat, The Buzz, many house parties, The Paramount, and The New Loft. They have played in a lot of other areas also, such as: Pontiac, MI, Steven's Point, WI, Chicago, IL, Deansville, WI, Platteville, WI, Mt. Horeb, WI, and Milwaukee, WI. Windell Greene has released one EP, and two full-length album. They have also talked with four record labels, about possible deals, although nothing has been agreed on yet. They have also made many appearances on radio and TV. |

Press Reviews
October 13, 1999(by Mike Burmeister of Adrenalin 'Zine) The hard-core punk band had no mercy for those who haven't witnessed them perform before. They started their set out with a couple songs containing plenty of heavy riffs and heart-pounding bass lines along with the drums and vocals to make a killer blend of music that makes you want more. Windell Greene then continued on with a couple slower and some more faster ass-kicking songs that would make anybody want to come see them play "live" again to get another taste of the craziness. July 17, 1999(by Tim Sundog) "You can tell that band has intense power, alot of energy and it just free flows. Kind of like The Door's only in a more moody way. A very spirtual way. You can feel that they wrap their music around you. Grab you by the apple cord and make you scream for more." June 25, 1999(by Stephen P. Helmer from D-Day Records) "Windell Greene is at the head of the class for their style of punk, or whatever they call it. Some of the first songs reminded me of early Soul Asylum. (I saw them live not too long ago when Soul Asylum had angst in a good way. In fact a lot of the disc sent me back to "I want more " from Suicidal Tendencies. I would have to say though that "Evil Thoughts" was my hands down favorite on the CD with the underwater vocals sending subliminal messages. It plain and simple just sticks out like a sore thumb. At times it would seem that there is total disregard for the application of music theory within sick and twisted ugly guitar solos. Who cares though, right? They are full of plenty enough soul and feeling to compensate for it tenfold. Maybe it's just that I happen to like this kind of music because of its honesty and sincerity. The lyrics are always thoughtful but not always delivered on silver platter. Once again so what? About half of them on a silver platter and the other half through a meat grinder. An exce llent source of contrast in there for certain. So far I haven't mentioned much about surprises but hidden in the track list is an array of soundscapes, monster bass beats, and psychedelic super samples of crickets. This makes the disc so unusual and I can definitely say Windell Greene is one of a kind. " |
