Artist History
Okay, here's the deal. The Gain have nothing to do with this page. I do speak to them and I do find out the goings on with the band but they have nothing to do with this webpage. Anyway, This is the best of my knowledge of the history of the band. Steve Pilace grew up in Lake Elsinore, California and didn't graduate high school. He was a total mod back in the day. We're talking suits, scooters, attitude, and the target shirts. This was in the mid-80's. Probably in '85 or thereabouts. This is where he met Corky Pigeon. Corky was a previous child star in the television series Silver Spoons. I believe this was when they started jamming together. They started a mod band in the late 80's called Then Again. This band lasted for couple years but then died out due to the other band member wanting to pursue other styles of music. In 1990, Steve and Corky started The Gain (this name for the band was an obvious offshoot of the Then Again band name). It was them two and a bassist named Brian Mitchell. They made a couple of demo tapes and even a 7" released on BRRAPP Records. Brian left the band to become a history teacher. This is when Joey Travers entered the picture. Then the Gain started to explode. This might be due to the fact that the Gain started throwing in a little bit of punk rock in their mix. Local 'zines started giving this band some serious props. Then, in about 1994-1995, the country started to take notice. This is when the band decided they had to start touring. They toured relentlessly for about 2 years releasing records, splits, appearing on comps, or interviews for a zine. Everywhere you turn you hear, "The Gain are playing tonight, you have to go see the guitar player. He's crazy!", "I think the drummer used to be in Silver Spoons. He was the dorky kid.", or "Man, the bassist for the Gain is hotter than the guys in Pansy Division!". Whatever you heard, it was positive. Sadly enough, The Gain recently called it quits. Don't know why. I'm just glad they released what they did and that I own it. This band will be missed greatly. If you never saw The Gain live, you missed one helluva show. |

Press Reviews
Punk Planet SingReadySteadySmash- Close your eyes and it's 1977. The Gain play a great mix of mod-rock and punk. A lot of mod bands tend to be treble heavy, but the Gain haven't lost the bottom end, although it's not bottom heavy either. I have a feeling that this one will be living on my turntable for a while. (harlo)Annexx SingReadySteadySmash- Alas, a full length for me to get my grubby little paws on. And what a joyous venture of frolicking madness it is. They fucking rule! Wait, I'll be right back, I gotta change my shorts. O.K., sorry about that it's just so hard to contain myself sometimes. Catchy fast punk that keeps you on the edge of your lawnchair, to the very last tune. It's not super speed screaming' 90 to nothing punk. More of a catchy mod punk. You just gotta hear it and then you'll understand the addiction. Skratch SingReadySteadySmash- One word can best describe the release by the Gain: FUN. The three piece who hail from LA have a power pop punk sound that now a days seems to be missing in the underground scene. (at least bands who do it well) Musically these guys have their act together, with vocals that are raspy but blend well with the music. Lyrically the Gain tackles familiar topics such as love and post teenage angst, but with a fresh approach. This is one album that could be enjoyed by all despite what musical scene they most identify with. (except for the straight edge faction) (Jason Chittenden) |
