Al Muzer - AquarianFaux Monks/self-titled (CD9) A quirky New Brunswick six-piece with jam band roots and an audible love for King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, Traffic, Renaissance, Kitchens of Distinction, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock and Innocence Mission; The Faux Monks manage to keep your feet moving, your ass shaking, and your mind working no matter what weird tangent or freakish time change they wander off to explore. Featuring Kate Sikora's yearning vocals layered over the Keith Emerson-like keyboards and bleating sax of Bob Gizzy, the twisted guitar loops and odd noises supplied by someone names "Stouty," Mr. Nann's samples, sounds and synths, and the mercurial rhythm duo of drummer Alex Posilkin and bassist Jim Woodbury- if the mid-Eastern prog-metal-jazz-crunch of "El Mundo" the cicus-like "Creed," the funky Santana-slam of "Ever so slightly," the grooving free-fall of "Dream," the screwed-down beat of "Bubblehouse" or the bizarre percussive "Evil Petting Zoo" don't do it for you, you don't deserve ears. Jim Perry - GreenprintPAC Band Night Rocks Cook Café This past Friday night the Programs and Activities Council (PAC) filled the cook café to capacity, hosting 3 local bands from 8 pm until 11:30 pm. The event was the brainchild of animal sounds chair Alec Molinaro, who recently assumed control of the proposed Ben Folds 5 show tentatively scheduled for late April. Friday's performance provided the opportunity for many to expand their musical horizons and was representative of the type of activity that makes cook a great place to live. While PAC hosted 3 bands for the evening, I was so impressed with the latter 2 that I will devote this article to them. The faux monks, a new Brunswick based sextet, led by groovy lead singer and newest addition to the band Kate Sikora, played an amazing set, showing influences of such artists as the Allman Brothers Band and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Sikora's powerful vocals and stage presence nicely complement the bands music without taking away from her band mates. Rarely does one find a group whose individual members complement each other as well as the Faux Monks. Percussionist Alex Posilkin brings 15 yrs of drumming experience to the faux monks, and does an excellent job of backing original faux monks members, bassist Jim Woodbury and leas guitarist, Stout. Along with Woodbury and stout keyboardist and saxophonist Bob Gizzi and "textural engineer" Brian Nann, also complement the band with their unique blend of sound. Faux monks have been jamming in the New Brunswick area since 1998 and often play Hoboken and NYC venues. The band will be playing at harvest moon on march 15th, the court tavern on march 24th, and Tumulty's pub on march 30th. Visit the band's web site (www.fauxmonks.net) for more information.Chris Pierce - East Coast Rocker. . .I broke a personal record by seeing two shows and five bands in one night recently. I was mostly surprised there were two shows in the same night i wanted to see. First were bobfields and the Faux Monks at Cook College. . . . . . . .Next on the block was my old friends the Faux Monks. They recorded some stuff with me( twice, different singers), but i had yet to see them in a lie setting. The only downall was that it was a at a sober college show, not a scummy bar or some drugged-out party where it would have been infintely more fun for me to see them. They have a combination heay metal/hippie rock thing going on with a female vocalist. The metal comes from their guitarist Kris and the hippie is from the keyboards, miniature drumset, and loads of baggy clothing. They sounded really good in the room, but the room atmosphere was awkward and informal.Shows like this are a good way to make $$$, while playing to next to no one. Tune in, turn on, drop out and go deaf duuude. Im gonna steal their guitarist someday
