Artist History
Shirley Caesar was born in 1938 and started singing at the age of eight with her mother in the Oak Grove Baptist Church in her home town of Durham, North Carolina. A couple of years later, Shirley began singing with the Charity Singers also in Durham. She was then known as "Baby Shirley" and toured Southern churches appearing with such gospel greats as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and Clara Ward. Shirley went to college for a couple of years and then began touring in 1958 for eight years as a soloist with The Caravans. Branching out from her singing into evangelism at a very early age, she left the group in 1966 to preach full time. Two years later she formed her own Shirley Caesar Singers. Shirley was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1982. Shirley has won some sixteen Grammy Awards, and numerous awards for excellence in the genre of Gospel Music. She has been honored with eight Dove Awards, and holds three gold records for "I'll Go," Stranger On The Road," and "Don't Drive Your Mama Away." Her video "Hold My Mule" has been RIAA certified gold. In 1992, Shirley won the Soul Train Music Award for the Best Gospel Album ("He's Working It Out For You"). Her unique style of preaching and singing has won the hearts of people around the world. |
