Artist History
SACRED RAISIN CAKES formed in the fall of 1998. SANG and ODG, long time lab partners in a bizzare musical science project, began collaborating with up-and-coming vocalist and alien lifeform specialist AIMEE. After performing for a short while in a number of incarnations, the trio soon found themselves working with reconstructive sonic surgeon ANTHONY J. RESTA (DURAN DURAN, SHAWN MULLINS, COLLECTIVE SOUL) and first engineer KARYADI SUTEDJA. The studio sessions that followed were released independently as the CD WHAT YOU WANT. Soon after release, the band found the CD's title track resting comfortably at number #3 on the Adult Album Alternative charts at their online distributor, MP3.COM. Other singles from the album followed, breaking in to and enjoying lengthy residencies on mp3.com's top 10. Near the turn of the millenium, beatboxing astronaut ROCKET - ONE joined the band, completing the rhythm section. |

Press Reviews
BASSPLAYER Magazine September 2000: A thumbs-up 'MP3.month' article featuring the song SOLACE. -"a hypnotic blend of traditional instruments, techno dance loops, and angelic vocals - with four flavors of bass.". PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH (http://www.tollbooth.org): Inside Out Soul Fest Review: "impressive playing, which included some creative use of samples...Definitely a band to keep an ear out for. The Cakes were not only a hit with us, but apparently quite popular on the MP3 site." THE NOISE September 2000: " The vocalist has a strong voice with great range and a tendency to achieve an impressive depth."THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH: 'What You Want' Album review. "At the centerpiece of each song is Aimee Bernard's rich, enthralling vocals which soothingly ride over the waves of loops and ambient guitar. Without graduating from the same sound-alike school, you can hear the influence of Tori Amos, Kate Bush, and Joni Mitchell in Bernard's compelling vocal styling:sweet, inviting, captivating. They're aren't many people that can sound as passionate, pitch perfect, and sultry as Over the Rhine's Karin Berquist, but Bernard belongs on that list. Bernard is also credited with the album's lyrics, which are universally poetic, introspective and inspiring."; WOMEN OF MP3.COM, an official station of MP3.com featured AIMEE in an interview for their September 2000 issue. |
