Artist History
MK7 was founded in 1998 by Joe Anikewich. You could say the band was formed in 1993 while Joe was still in college but for professional purposes we will say it was 1998, when he went to a jam session with the players who played on his album a week later. The band has been playing out on Long Island for the last two years. The first album "Saeeda Swing" was releasedin 1998, recorded at the Coop Studio in FreeportLong Island. The session was a meeting of minds, as they had never played together as a group. Thealbum was received lightly in the jazz communitysomething they wish is not the case with the trimmeddown band that now exsist. They trio has a much different sound then the largerensemble. Check it out for yourself. |

Press Reviews
Lately, it seems, great jazz has gone the way of the dodo. Blame Kenny G., the Yellowjackets and the rest of the CD101.9FM ilk. The dumbed-down, anti-soul vibe of this dreadful smooth jazz is much like an infectious disease-it overtakes the host body with its destructive ways, in this case making us more numb, more dumb and less imaginative. Fortunately, for jazz fanatics, Long Island has MK7.What makes this Bellmore-based outfit unique, especially here on the isle of mindless consumption, is the fact thats it's a group of reconstuctionists-jazz traditionalists who incorporate modern-song structures and techniques without loosing spirited interplay and deep seated soul. They avoid rock overtones and new-agey undercurrents by staying true to the genre's root of bop and swing and occasionally adding a mature but groovy world-beat twist. The result is an accessible sound that can be ingested by even the most diseased ears.Composer and drummer Joe Anikewich leads vibraphonist Lloyd Haber into "MK7," a modal exploration of West African rhythms from the bands debut album Saeeda Swing. Omar Kabir's flugelhorn playing is impressive, especially when he's applying Miles Davis' slurring technique to his heated blowing. Blues for Lloyd, off 1999's Caravan EP, is an essential guitar/organ number and brings to mind the Wes Montgomery/Jimmy Smith collaborations. Local guitar hero Bill Titus and organist Oliver Von Essen combine talents with Anikewich (the trio is the heart of this band) to create a stunning, straightforward shuffle blues."Amazing Grace," (you got it, the old spiritual) finds the band in tropical mode, applying reggae groove to this very traditonal song, with Paul Dooley providing perfectly rasped lyrics. The track can be found on the band's third and most recent effort, Seasoned, which will be released next month. Anikewich is serving as engineer and producer for that album. Also from Seasoned is "Crabtology," a smoking be-bop tune featuring tenor saxophonist Mike Filice doing his best young Coltrane. The composition also gives Anikewich ample room to stretch out and solo on his skins. This is how jazz was meant to be played.--Ian D'Giff |
