Artist description
A smokin' blend of funk and jazz with "new-school" techniques like looping and digital effects has made mamaSutra one of Southern California's most sought after touring acts. Deep grooves and sexy vocals punctuate jammin' improvisations that keep fans coming back for more. mamaSutra's broad range has brought them to the stage with groups as diverse as The Funky Meters, Leftover Salmon, Mickey Hart and The B-Side Players while their ability to keep a crowd dancing for hours makes mamaSutra one of LA's best headliners.

Artist History
mamaSutra formed in the summer of 1999 with the coming together of Molly Boyles and Ray Messick. They were joined by Russell Spurlock soon after, and the three began working out songs and looking for a drummer. Several months later Ben was discovered, and the full potential of this funky combo was realized. |

Press Reviews
Here's a new band to LA that we're excited to let everyone in on! mamaSutra recently relocated to Los Angeles and we were fortunate to bump into them at the Gig in West Hollywood. This four-piece band is a total live experience. mamaSutra is the closest thing you'll probably find to a funk orchestra without the orchestra. From a musical standpoint mamaSutra stands out for their talent and ability to be different. Just another female fronted band? I think not! Lead singer and bass player Molly Boyles belts out funk with soulful style while playing a "fretless bass." Guitarist Russell Spurlock adds a twist, jumping back and forth from his synthesized guitar to the saxophone. This was the first time I've ever seen a saxophone used with delay to lay down chords to solo over. Bring it all together with Drummer Ben Martin and the rhythms and solos of guitarist Ray Messick and this band really comes together in the right way. Watching MamaSutra play live you can really tell they're into their art. At times it seemed like there was too much going on, but I couldn't help but get caught up. The band never missed a beat and Molly's smile lit up the stage for the entire show. The live energy is really happening with the band. Article by: Seth S.TheLAMusicScene.com MamaSutra's latest CD release, "Live at the Bluebird Theater," features ten songs, including a cover of Herbie Hancock's Chameleon. The CD was recorded "Live at the Bluebird Theater," as the title suggests, and features the band with a DJ. The DJ adds an interesting twist to MamaSutra's sound. Track three, "Smoke 'em If You Got 'em," I thought was the most interesting track on the CD. The song starts with a long intro that reminded me of something Pink Floyd might have done if they incorporated some rap and funk influences. The end result is 69+ minutes of music that's a lot of fun to listen to. And finally... Without a doubt in my mind my favorite song by MamaSutra was "If you wanna." "If you wanna" get down, left me humming all the way home. Unfortunately the songs not on their newest CD, "Live at the Bluebird Theater." I did find the song on MP3.com, and even though it's a great song, it doesn't compare to seeing the band perform it live. This four-piece band is a collision of sounds that gets all funked up in its own unique way. |
