    Artist History
The Lawn Jockeys began as a duo in 1996 when Gene Murrell (guitar, vocals), playing his regular solo gig at Remy's reluctantly invited Scott Morlock (keyboard, bass, and vocals) to sit-in. Murrell recalls that he wasn't happy about the intrusion, "it had already been a lousy night for some reason, and then later this drunk lady began hecklin' me to let this guy sit-in." Morlock remembers, "I didn't really want to play and he (Murrell) was obviously not thrilled about playin' with a stranger. But my dad's lady friend kept eggin' me on." Morlock fetched his bass from the car and joined Murrell on stage. The two then had to come up with a song that they both knew. "Ventura Highway" by AMERICA. "It was one of those moments in your life that you never forget -- like when you learned Elvis was dead or when you saw the Shuttle explode", Murrell continues, "on the very first note I knew something incredible was about to happen." Days later, Morlock who was only visiting Hilton Head, returned home to Florida to collect his family. He moved to Hilton Head Island permanently a few weeks later. Murrell concludes, "Scott calls and says, 'let's rehearse!'" The Lawn Jockeys (a name that Murrell had been anxious to use for years) were born.Another local musician, Bryan Philpot (electric guitar, vocals) heard about this new duo stirring things up on the island. "I couldn't believe how much noise two guys could make", Philpot recalls. Eventually Philpot was invited to sit-in. "I think they let me play because my speakers were better than theirs" added Philpot with a laugh. In the spring of 1998, The Lawn Jockeys officially became a trio. Finally, in 1999, drummer Chris Russell signs on to fill out the roster.
