Press Reviews
*****"RADAR"CD-Review(by Robert Jansen)Why is Mike Zee's music invisible? It's the type of music that goes unnoticed - until the music stops. It's a musical disappearing act, which makes the music extremely malleable and versatile. Reviewing individual tracks on this CD would be virtually impossible as each track flows into the next. Hence this review will flow from one topic to the next.Mike Zee has mastered the implementation of thick analog pads and sweeps. These textures are a staple throughout the CD. The pristine recording is backed by a steady 'off-beat' kick drum/hi-hat rhythm. It is this combination of texture vs. pulse that puts RADAR on the listening map.Versatility? In a club setting, RADAR would throb and kick its way into your mind and control your very movements and emotion. In a game setting, the music would create a mood that keeps the player locked into the game, yet does not distract from the interaction. In a driving setting - trust me on this one - the music creates a feeling of weightlessness as the vehicle floats down the road. All the while leaning into corners as the steady bass kicks the tires and keeps the ship firmly planted on the road.Take the music away and the club turns into a vast cavern of emptiness, the game turns into a dull trek on the Internet and the car seems more like a ride on the city bus transit system. That's why the music from RADAR is invisible - when it's playing, it mesmerizes the listener, when it's not playing, there's a feeling of emptiness.RADAR is definitely a good listen - if you pick your spots. By the time the 6th song Gleam arrives, the listener is almost in a trance. Most of the CD is built around the same key "G" and the same tempo (approx. 130-140bpm). After a several listens I was craving for a different key or modulation. With this in mind, it's best to launch this CD when you're "in the mood" to be captivated, mesmerized or relaxed. Just don't turn it off midway though the CD.POOF!(RobReport:http://www.mp3artistarchive.com/the_rob_report.htm)****"Machine"(from "TheMachine"(techno-opera)®)"Mike Zee - "Machine"Part of a self-proclaimed "techno-opera" of the same title, "Machine" reminded me a lot of "Oxygene"-era Jean-Michael Jarre. Mike blends classical piano with techno-dance elements and assorted electronica influences. The melodic themes intertwined with electronic textures and vocal effects are very interesting. Although not my normal listening fare, this piece is very well done. Recommended for fans of Jean-Michael Jarre and electronica..."-Theo's Review Thang ( mp3artistarchive.com )-***************-"Techno beats take a back seat to wandering guitar instrumentals in these Dark Ambient tracks. Spacey effects make this sound like a demo tape for a new X-Files theme song. Similar Artists: Delerium, Orbital, Seefeel, Joe Satriani..."-www.listen.com- |
