Artist description
Santa Barbara’s Kelp plays modern original surf music and traditional classics from the heyday of the surf scene. Coming out of the garage above Rincon Point in April, 1996, Kelp has played up and down the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco. The band is a third-wave trio consisting of Paul Fritz on guitar, Todd Buranen on bass and Sean Stark on drums. Like the mix of songs, a mix of traditional spring reverb with modern digital enhancements and stereo amplification gives Kelp a big and thoroughly modern sound. |

Press Reviews
“Kelp's sound is digital reverb drenched, intelligent, and hungry. They dominate listener attention with numerous changes like you might expect in prog, but not in surf. There's no doubt about the surf imagery, or the fast double picking trad basis, but their hard left turn at the jetty has given them a unique and strong sound.” - Phil Dirt, KFJC radio, San Jose“Kelp is Santa Barbara’s only surf band and one of the best on the west coast. They play an inspired set.” - Jim Dunfrund, KXLU radio, Los AngelesReview by Phil Dirt - Reverb CentralPO Box 7240, Santa Cruz, CA 95061-7240 USA KELP Underwater Journey **** Santa Barbara's Kelp has finally issued a CD, on CD-R entirely from tracks recorded on Phil Dirt's Surf's Up (KFJC) and Jim Dunfrund's Surf Waves (KXLU). Great consistent sound, exceptionally fine playing, unique and inspired writing, and a completely different surf sound. Digital reverb drenched, intelligent, and urgent. |
