Artist History
DAVIS GAINES has the distinction of having performed the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” more than 2,000 times during his five year run in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. He received the Bay Area Critic’s Award for Best Actor, and remains longest-running Phantom of Los Angeles and Broadway. Davis was subsequently chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince to play the leading role in the world premiere of Whistle Down the Wind in Washington, D.C. Other Broadway and National Tour credits include Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! with Carol Channing, Camelot with Richard Burton, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Alexis Smith. Mr. Gaines’ Off-Broadway appearances include Des McAnuff”s The Death of Von Richthofen as Witnessed From Earth, the Maury Yeston/Larry Gelbart musical,One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, She Loves Me, and Forbidden Broadway. He made his New York City Opera debut in The New Moon and appeared in New York in concert versions of Sitting Pretty, The Cat and the Fiddle, Pippin, and the Encores! production of The Boys From Syracuse. In regional theatre, he appeared in Damn Yankees as Joe Hardy directed by the legendary George Abbott, in Arsenic and Old Lace as Mortimer Brewster opposite Kate Reid, in The Rink with Lainie Kazan, and in Two Into One with Tony Randall. Film work includes a featured role in Warlock: The Armageddon with Julian Sands and television credits include Chicago Hope,Veronica’s Closet, Bodies of Evidence, and Murder, She Wrote. Other televised appearances are two PBS Great Performances, as a soloist with the Boston Pops and in Jerry Herman’s Broadway at the Bowl, the 1994 Kennedy Center Honors; and the opening ceremony of the 1998 Goodwill Games. Mr. Gaines has sung with virtually every major symphony orchestra in North America, including appearances with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, and has performed his cabaret act at New York’s Rainbow and Stars and Hollywood’s Cinegrill. In addition to his critically-acclaimed debut solo CD, Against the Tide, on LAP Records (SEE MERCHANDISE), his voice can be heard on 20 cast recordings and compilation albums (SEE RECORDINGS). He is currently working on a new solo CD, featuring the songs of Sammy Cahn.Most recently he appeared in Los Angeles with Kelsey Grammer, Christine Baranski and Melissa Manchester for the 20th anniversary production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. |
