Artist History
The New Philharmonia of Cologne (Junge Philharmonie Koeln) was founded in 1972. Its membership is mainly composed of graduates of the most important German conservatories who, upon finishing their studies, wish to experience the reality of a practical musical life playing chamber music and symphonic repertoire at a high level before furthering their careers as soloists or as members of full-time professional orchestras. In the last 25 years the JPK Chamber Orchestra has given more than 5000 concerts with different programs and varying formats. In Germany, is has realized 15 television programs and made numerous recordings. Since 1978 it has made itself well-known by its tours through most European countries, especially France and Spain, countries where it today enjoys the goodwill of numerous friends and admirers. In 1989 the JPK's leaders decided to assemble all participating members from past years, and create an entirely independent Symphony Orchestra. The New Philharmonia of Cologne gave its symphonic debut in the most important concert halls in Germany during January 1990 with outstanding success and without private or governmental sponsorship. Since then both the Chamber and Symphony Orchestras of the New Philharmonia of Cologne work constantly during their seasons (leaders of the symphonic group being the members of the chamber orchestra), performing nearly 250 concerts per year taking place in all parts of the world.#VOLKER HARTUNGwas born in Cologne. He started his viola studies at the Cologne Conservatory with Mr. G.Ruymen, continuing them with Ivan Galamian and Margaret Pardee as well as studying conducting at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He furthered his studies at the Meadowmount Summer School, New York State, with Joseph Gingold and members of the Juilliard Quartet, finishing his studies with Alan de Veritch at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, California. He also studied conducting with Andreas Brockmann and Sergiu Celibidache in Germany.Since 1987 Mr. Hartung resides in Cologne and has been the artistic director of the NEW PHILHARMONIA OF COLOGNE, whose chief conductor he is today. He already led this orchestra in several extraordinarily successful tours throughout Europe (Amsterdam Concertgebouw; Musikhalle Hamburg; Philharmonie Cologne).THE NEW PHILHARMONIA OF COLOGNE is essentially an orchestra composed of soloists. Several times per year the ensemble is expanded for symphonic concerts, which take place in Europe's most important concert halls with constant success. The programs of the chamber orchestra are especially chosen to harmonize with the great acoustics of the ancient churches and cathedrals, but are also well-suited for playing in concert halls. These programs are selected from different periods of music history, mainly from the baroque, classical and romantic periods.THE NEW PHILHARMONIA OF COLOGNE works without any grants, subsidies or sponsorship of any kind, and is thus solely dependant on the sympathy and generosity of its audiences. Admitting that this procedure is extraordinarily difficult and demands a great idealism, one should also say that there is nearly no greater satisfaction for the organizers as well as for the musicians than the experience and reward of playing a concert with music of the old masters for an enthusiastic public. We are very glad to welcome you as our guests tonight and we wish you a most rewarding musical experience with our orchestra. |
