Artist description
No bullshit Rock 'N' Roll! Spoke Norton is influenced by many forms of music, especially rockabilly, blues, hardrock, American folk, and punk. Forget being unique - who is anymore? Yet, Spoke Norton does have voice and will rock your ass off, sooth your soul, or make you laugh. The band simply plays from the heart and the sound will strike a familar chord that listeners will identify with. It would be misleading to say Spoke Norton sounds like their influences, but depending upon which song you listen to, you may hear strong similarities or just mere glimpses of any of the following artists: the Paladins, Cracker, Albert King, Ventures, Led Zeppelin, Creedence (CCR) & John Fogerty, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, Social Distortion, Buddy Guy, Allman Brothers, Wilco, Tragically Hip, Goo Goo Dolls, Replacements, Robin Trower, the Clash, Violent Femmes, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Everclear, and the Beatles. |

Artist History
Spoke Norton began with jam sessions in 1985 with Bryan McDonald, on drums, and Tom Vann, on guitar and vocals. At first, they played a lot of blues and surf cover tunes, but soon they started writing originals. Tom had always been into rockin' blues and rockabilly and Bryan into punk and surf. As these jam sessions evolved, the band melded these musical forms together. Avid fans of everything from John Hiatt to the Ventures, it would not be out of place for Spoke Norton to write a song that sounds like Steve Earle singing while John Fogerty plays lead to a Social Distortion rhythm section. For a time the band played under different names, with Steve Holvey playing bass. It was at this time that a raw style began to form. Then in 1996, after a year hiatus, a new four piece blues band was formed by Tom with a new drummer, bass player, and second guitarist. Soon Bryan came back to play drums and this band lasted for a little while, playing some local gigs and festivals. But blues alone was not enough - the band needed a change and it took a little over a year to figure out just what the band needed. Finally, in 1998 it clicked. Tom got together with Bryan and Paul Losiniecki (guitarist from the last band) and formed the current lineup of Spoke Norton. The band was now a three piece again with Paul on bass. Quickly they reverted back to the style that had been started years ago, which can be heard on their first CD release (2-1/2 Years Late). Recorded in July of 1999, the CD is now available. Press Reviews
Artist Review: Spoke Norton rock with a simple, rootsy feel that never abates, even when they're churning out one of their harder numbers. Blues and country seem to be the favored genres they merge the styles with rock 'n' roll like true masters. –Listen.com |
